In Honor of America’s 250th Birthday—and one of America's greatest living symbols
As our nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of its independence, I felt that, as someone with appreciation for trees who enjoys bonsai as a hobby, I’d be remiss —maybe even unpatriotic—to let this historic milestone pass without paying tribute to one of America's greatest living symbols; the mighty oak, our National Tree. Yesterday, I roughly trimmed and shaped this oak tree (see photos) that I’ve grown from an acorn in preparation for today, on its continued journey as a bonsai. I’ve intentionally let it grow freely to increase the size of the trunk and branches before pruning it back in its rough form multiple times as it’s still in development - not refinement yet. The timing could not have been more fitting to dress it up. The oak is not only America’s National Tree; it’s also honored as the national tree of several other nations, including those of some of our group here from England, and Poland, among others. Across cultures and throughout history, the oak has come to symbolize strength, courage, endurance, wisdom, and faith. Scientists estimate that oak trees have existed on Earth for approximately 65,000,000 years. Yes, 65 million. Few living things have contributed more generously to mankind. Oaks help produce the oxygen we breathe and clean it, provide shade that cools us and our earth, enrich the soil and shelter wildlife They have supplied firewood for heat, and have furnished humanity medicine from their bark and food from their acorns for thousands of years—maybe longer—benefitting humans, our beloved birds, squirrels, and many other creatures. In turn, those creatures have carried, scattered and buried those acorns far and wide, helping spread these magnificent trees across the globe. The oak occupies a place of honor in spiritual traditions and religious history, symbolizing steadfastness, righteousness, and the enduring strength of creation. Throughout military history, the oak has likewise represented valor, leadership, rank and distinguished service, appearing in military insignia and decorations around the world.

@John Sev thank you so much for this post! 💚 I grew up in the woods near Paola, Kansas, which is south of KC. We had ginormous oaks, the kind with the giant acorns adorned with big gnarly caps. I have 3 brothers. We used to climb the trees. And we had acorn fights. Those acorns hurt when you’re pelted with them! 😣 Now I live in Colorado, and we don’t see the massive oaks like we had in Kansas. But, 20 years ago, we were house hunting. It was a new house, and there were small Linden trees out front. When we came to the patio, there were two oaks. They were only as high as the eave of the garage. Right then, I knew this was the house for us. Today, the oaks (and the lindens) reach far above the roof of our two-story house. We are the only house in the neighborhood with oak trees. Occasionally I find a volunteer oak sapling in the yard but I have to pull it because our yard is very small. I do love bonsais and would love to grow oak bonsais. It never occurred to me to do that from my own oak! Could I transplant a sapling or should I start from an acorn?

@John Sev thanks for the tips! Sometimes I’m able to pull the sapling with the acorn still attached, especially if it is in soft soil. The squirrels like to bury acorns in my potted plants and raised gardens 😂
Simple Strength
Short, sweet, and effective. Today we’re focused on building strength for everyday life. Grab a chair for a few sit-to-stands, breathe deeply, and enjoy moving naturally. The stronger we become, the more we can enjoy life's greatest superpower—walking.

And you didn’t even have to do tree pose to be a tree for them! 😂 🐿️
Move Playfully & Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦
As we continue exploring the idea of living naturally, today is all about play. There’s nothing more natural than moving with curiosity, joy, and a playful spirit. Somewhere along the way, many of us forget how to play. Today, let’s rediscover it. Move with freedom, laugh a little, and enjoy what your body can do.
