Chip and dip with sections
Hello! My friend has asked me to make her a chip and dip with separations, and Iโ€™ve been struggling with cracking. Iโ€™ve kept very well covered with plastic, have used ample amounts of slip and scoringโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know if thereโ€™s a trick to making these? Any suggestions? I may attempt to handbuild the entire thing, but with this one I threw the inner and outer part simultaneously on the wheel, and added the inner section walls later.

One idea. Could you just attach your dividers to the dip bowl so both lift out of the main dish? Or glue glaze after bisque? You would have to be careful of shrink rate on both pieces, but maybe less stress on the main clay body that way. Just a thought.

@Susy Oviedo we all suffer with this sort of thing. Trial and error. Persistence wins when working with clay and I'm sure you will work out a solution and It will turn out perfect. I Look forward to seeing your efforts turn into a successful chip and dip for your friend.๐Ÿ™‚
๐Ÿ’œ Looking for some inspiration from my clay friends! ๐Ÿ’œ
You may have seen that every year I have a special pottery day with each of my two granddaughters where we make gifts for the family at Christmas. This week we celebrated their 3rd and 6th birthdays.๐ŸŽ‚ Last Christmas, my eldest granddaughter Mila completely stole everyoneโ€™s hearts by basically โ€œhosting her own YouTube videoโ€ impromptu at just 5 years old ๐Ÿ˜‚ She was absolutely amazingโ€ฆ including reminding everyone to โ€œask a grown up if you need to use sharp stuff!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ’œ ( Iโ€™ll pop the video link below because it still makes me smile so much ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8o2w6bPWEc&t=620s Wellโ€ฆ Mila has now asked if she can come and spend the day with Nanna and Grumpy on Thursday because her school is closed here in the UK for voting day (they use the school as a polling station). Her little sister will still be in kindergarten, so sheโ€™ll get a whole day with us ๐Ÿฅน And her exact words were: โ€œNanna, Can we do potteryโ€ฆ and can I make my own YouTube video?โ€ Honestlyโ€ฆ my heart melted. Now usually I am FULL of project ideasโ€ฆ but my brain has completely gone blank this time! Plus only got a few days to come up with something! She has tried the wheel once and loved it, but I think hand building would probably work best for a fun filming day. She learns incredibly quickly and made some gorgeous angels last year. I wondered if anyone here has done particularly successful pottery projects with children around this age? Maybe something fun she could make multiples of as Christmas giftsโ€ฆ or perhaps one really special piece for her own room? Iโ€™d absolutely love any ideas or inspiration from fellow clay people ๐Ÿ’œ All photos to inspire me would get extra brownie points ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฏ

@Jeanette Stevens I should be an expert at that. Lol use a large round trim tool to pull through the slab to make a semi round coil like you can with cup handles, and just round the edges is what I would do
Remember My โ€œSecret Chip Experimentโ€โ€ฆ? Hereโ€™s The Result ๐Ÿ‘€
I finally managed to finish editing and upload my Mystery Glaze Chip experiment video to YouTube ๐Ÿ’œ To put this experiment into contextโ€ฆ I actually started this around 6 weeks ago ๐Ÿ˜… Itโ€™s involved: โœจ two low-fire firings โœจ two cone 6 firings โœจ multiple rounds of testing โœจ test tiles AND actual functional pieces Some of you may have spotted a few of the pieces appearing in my last kiln opening video, and quite a few people have been asking what on earth Iโ€™ve been testing ๐Ÿ˜‚ As most of you knowโ€ฆ I LOVE glaze chips, I LOVE testing, and I really wanted to venture into the unknown a little and see just how far I could take this experiment. Needless to sayโ€ฆ this definitely isnโ€™t the end of it. If anything, this feels like the beginning because I now want to take the testing even further ๐Ÿ‘€ Itโ€™s honestly taken me over 2.5 weeks just to edit together all the footage, firings, tests and photos from the past 6 weeks into one video, and trying to make it flow coherently was definitely a challenge ๐Ÿ˜… So apologies if parts feel a little chaotic or rabbit-warren-like! But Iโ€™m genuinely SO excited by some of the things Iโ€™ve learned and some of the results that came out of this. I actually shared a tiny sneak peek of this experiment in a Skool call weeks ago, so this is where the experiment has progressed to now ๐Ÿ’œ Would absolutely love to hear what you think if you decide to take a peek ๐Ÿ˜Š https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srzbVWc8kZo

I love this so much! Thank you for taking all that time to share your results. To think how much glaze we waste with the brush water! This was a brilliant test with amazing, beautiful results!
How would you dry this idea?
This is a platter I made a month ago and it sold..But I have a request to create an octopus holding up a bowl over his head. This one I dried flat then I glaze glued it to the platter. These are difficult to sculpt as is because I keep breaking the arms off. Any ideas on how to get it lift the arms to dry so I can attach a bowl after bisque. Sponges and lots of them , or hang it upside down and try to slip and score his arms in a bowl shape? Any other ideas to hold up the bowl?

@Mary Carolyn Thank you ! I am already rethinking what I need to do here. I stuck a flat plate on top to see and you can't see the work I did at all... in other words, the work is rather pointless unless I can create a 5 inch or so lift ....I was thinking to only glaze glue attach a bellied or bubble cup shape with a small plate attached to that. they could put either the bowl or platter on top of the smaller (maybe grooved) plate for balance .. and not have to wash the whole piece. it could serve many functions like chip and dip, serving platter or even cake stand lol. I'm going to have to make sure it's all level and I'm already considering a do over design. Its not to late to toss him in the reclaim bucket [Sigh] Any ideas?

@Mary Carolyn yeah..my friend came up with a totally different idea for him removable inside the bowl instead of out and use the arms as snack sections inside..with a shell dip bowl on the head. I'll at least bisque him and see if it will work.
Screen Printing on my Pottery using Amaco Inks ๐Ÿ’–
Some more screen printing on my pottery using Amaco Inks๐Ÿ’•Iโ€™m loving using the Mayco Mesh Screen Printing with the Amaco Inks - itโ€™s so amazing how they can be reused- just wash the ink of after use - I really love them โค๏ธ

I love that you used the lighthouse on a cup! Thats the really cool thing about silkscreens you can go around cup or shapes easy and wipe off then reuse if you mess up. Beautiful work, Linda!
