Listening
Anyone who has studied acting knows about listening. Listening is also a big part of ventriloquism. What I mean is, the puppet on your arm is your scene partner and you must react to them in real time. I am getting better with this. Anyone else working on this? What are your thoughts?

I once basically made a video of what could have been a podcast episode with my puppet, Monster, where we discussed the history of the Beatles and random facts along with interspersing with singing Beatles songs. It was a fun project, and there were a couple of times where Monster said something I wasn't expecting that made me laugh. That was a fun exercise. Sometimes also my partner, me, her puppet and my puppet will just watch TV together and chat.

Something I have explored conceptually is the notion of me, as the ventriloquist, functioning as a "speech therapist" for a 1000 year-old, weird, fuzzy little blue guy who struggles with pronouncing the letters "P" "B" and "M." I even watched a couple YouTube videos on how people do speech therapy. It's a trick to help us operate on a secondary neural pathway as we practice the mental work of learning, and it also adds another layer of emotional connection with my puppet and is a fun part of an "origin story."

Thank you. It was fun!
Hecklers
Has anyone ever dealt with hecklers? May Wilson has gone to battle several times with hecklers. Once we were doing a show in Las Vegas and a woman got onto a fight with May, stormed out and demanded her money back because “the puppet was rude.” (Yup, facts). Anyone else?

Ok. So I'm curious about this forum and scrolling through old posts. Heckling happens sometimes when we try Karaoke. The first time, for some reason, Monster took sides with the heckler, demeaned my performance and praised his own. Ironically it was Monster that took the air out of the heckler's lungs. We do that trick now.
Mic Question
Who prefers a mic stand and who prefers a wireless mic? I like the mic stand from my comedy club days. I talk, my figure talks into it. I have fun making it look real. Some prefer wireless mics. What does the group like?

We haven't had the opportunity perform much - mainly at open mics. But when we have the preferred is headset (so we can interact more) with a wired headset with a super long cable and the kind of headset that goes over both ears - to both promote stability and prevent technical difficulties but also to let us roam the audience if needed. Lol - once we showed up to an open mic with a large space and no microphone or capability for one. My puppet was vocally furious at me for not having researched the venue, but we made it work.
