THE BIG SURPRISE OPENING TO THE 2026 JUNOS AWARDS IN CANADA
Wowzers... They are back. And Anika Niles is Brilliant on the Drums! https://youtu.be/kVw-4L59Tw0?si=Y-NDDBGxnAOw3ADK

That was a pretty reasonable production of the Junos overall. I thought the show always lacked polish in the past. Anika is amazing. Totally awesome style.
Help!
So I'm really struggling and wondering if there is anyone who has time to "uncomplicate" a few things for me in realtime? The whole LUFS, VU and peak stuff is starting to overwhelm me. I first remember seeing it mentioned when Jake used to do the mixes. But he would only normalise gain. His mixes sounded awesome, and as far as I can remember he didn't go into all the metering. He simply made sure nothing clipped above -10, then carried on with his volume balance. I was learning this way for years but it feels like everything has changed. Now it seems it's essential to use the meters etc. So was Jake doing it wrong all this time, or am I just really missing something? I really feel lost and would like some simple guidance. Ideally just one or maybe two people because it seems nobody can really agree on anything when it comes to methods. I've been doing this for years! Hopefully someone can help me get at least one decent mix to my name? I don't want to give up, but it seems pointless trying to learn when the structure keeps changing! I have a mix that I am currently going through but I only get as far as listening on replay these days! I try and follow along with the tutorials but everything seems so back-to-front when I delve into my own work. Then there are people saying plug-ins don't matter and stock is just as good, but when I ask a question about how to do something I get told to buy a million different plug-ins. Or when I try and follow a tutorial, and they have a plug-in I don't have, I then get told any plug of the same nature will do! It's like people don't want to help each other anymore and just want to make things a complicated as possible! PLEASE HELP! I'm from the UK if that helps also. There was a guy who said he'd be willing to Do like live meetings with me, that would have been awesome! But I haven't heard back from him recently and I have forgot his name! If you see this, is the offer still open?

George, I totally get what you are going through. I haven't been at 'skool' for a while so I came upon your plight and thought I give you my five Canadian cents. If you are not under time pressure to tackle these things, take it easy and enjoy the learning process. I was mixing and mastering just fine, even with pure midi notes (without audio transfer), and I people liked what I came up with. When I started the journey with Caleb, God bless him, he turned my world upside down. I got very much entangled with all the things coming at me and sadly, this kind of destroyed my writing and composing, which I do mostly. Luckily, I don't have to produce a product for someone in a short time, so I am not in the same boat as most folks here seem to be in. And guess what, the new mixes I did were not as dynamic as my old ones, which really made me think to just drop it and have someone else mix and master. BUT, I am not a quitter, so I am trying to step away comfortably from this scenario, so I can enjoy writing and composing again. I think at one point it will all fall into place. cheers, and good luck! ... yes, I also got me the MvMeter2 and find it very useful for gain staging, and the video Tom Baldwin provided is excellent too.

George, I forgot to mention that Sara Carter has a few shorter videos just focussing on your specific issue. Please check.
Hears Perfection
Anyone have a thought or two regarding Hears Perfection from Brainworx? I’ve been needing to work on calibrating my listening environment both on headphones and with my speakers. Plus, the plug in was on sale, $80 off on Plugin Alliance, so it seemed like a good time to take the plunge. Also, I do have Ollo headphones so my initial thought would be the Hears would be instead of as opposed to in tandem with the Ollo set up. Thanks for all your help and hope all are well and busy.

I am glad I stumbled upon this thread. I have been stuck finishing some works for quite a while due to my hearing loss. Since I joined this group I have learned a slew of techniques to mix and master only to realize that I kept compensating some frequencies and hereby destroyed my mix. Hearse was suggested by a friend, but I thought it is just another gimmick (I am wearing hearing aids and I do not really like them for many reasons, but I reach for them for critical listening in discussions). Thanks to this thread, I dared to purchase the Hearse plugin and I must say I am pleasantly surprised. Results immediately. I still prepare and finish tracks without Hearse and only apply the plugin when checking the overall mix (I have been fairly comfortable to go with visuals until now, so I am still used to that). How do you approach the workflow? From the start, intermittent or in the final stages?

I wish Berlin all the best. She has chimed in on some of my posts and always had some advice or idea ready. Thank you for that. Was hoping to get to know you/your work better.
Crossing With You
This is a song I wrote and produced and have mixed best I can (that is, finished is better than perfect?) according to the Foundation Method. It comes out about -8.5 I-LUFS but some sections are maybe -6. Let me know your opinion about whether it met the goals and is ready to submit to a mastering engineer. Of course, I'm taking the Mastering Intensive, so I may be able to answer my own question shortly! :) .https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yTP1CVnbJfdQDZLdS9_GZZllluTl0Vus/view?usp=drive_link

Tom, this is a wonderful piece of music. I personally like your approach towards writing and arrangement. Your creativity in sound sculpting also comes through. I think you seem to run into similar issues that I run into, which in my particular case is a hearing problem. As we get older frequencies disappear. So I try to make up for that and that's where the trouble starts. Transients, muddiness, too much in the high frequencies etc. So I get more and more into the idea to have someone else master the music. However, I have learned enough here over the time I joined this here group of fine youngn's to sound reasonably good. So I am hanging in there. Being a fan of THE NATIONAL I can hear what you are looking for. I would be interested to hear what @Paint Masteringdotca can do with your track. I think it would be very challenging and rewarding at the same time. Take care!
