May Song Challenge
When I studied jazz improvisation in college, one thing I learned is that creativity thrives in boundaries. "Do anything you want" is a creativity killer. BUT "You get one note to play over a 12-bar blues form" forces you to get creative. You still have things like dynamics, length, articulation, rhythms and space to play with. AND it actually frees you up to experiment within those boundaries. So for this month I wanted to give us a couple boundaries. I'll explain below. One thing I like to do on occasion is look to see what songs are being most widely used by churches on CCLI's SongSelect. Now, of course that's not a measurement of a song's worth or value or usefulness, but it does show what songs worship leaders are choosing to use the most (at least among those that do reporting.) I think there's a lot to be learned as we notice patterns or similarities of the songs. What are the song forms, melodic structures, themes, even tempo and time signature. Ultimately all those things are there to serve a purpose for the content of the song to be a vehicle for God's people to worship and sing to Him. So for this month I took a look and here are the title, time signature and tempo of the top 5 songs today: 1) Goodness of God - 4/4 | BPM - 63 2) Holy Forever - 4/4 | BPM - 72 3) Gratitude - 6/8 | BPM 104 4) Trust in God - 6/8 | BPM 148 5) Great Are You Lord - 6/8 | BPM 144 Your May Challenge - write a song in either 4/4 with bpm between 63 and 72 OR write a song in 6/8 bpm between 104 and 148 (eighth note) You have freedom to experiment within those boundaries. Can't wait to hear what we all come up with!

Verse 1 From the depths I cry to you, O Lord Hear my voice; I need to be restored My transgressions – oh, did you record? Death entangles me just like a cord Verse 2 Silence lined my path to misery Your heavy hand, and my atrophy Lord, how long? Turn your face to me. Come and rescue me, deliver me Pre-chorus Then I said: I have sinned I confessed my sins to you Chorus Forgiveness, forgiveness, how blessed is the one! Whose sins are all cleansed, whose guilt is undone In Jesus we trust, in God’s only Son In His grace and mercy, forgiveness is won.

@Jon Althoff Yeah I agree about needing the chorus after v1. But I don't feel like v1 gets "low" enough. V2 is where the cry for mercy gets desperate enough to warrant the heights of the chorus. And also, once the chorus is sung, it doesn't feel right to return to the depths of despair. Hmmm, quite the conundrum. Perhaps v1 and v2 are too similar, and one of those verses needs to take a different angle? Perhaps a focus on the "how" of forgiveness, e.g. Matthew 26:28, Ephesians 1:7, Acts 13:38?
Melody in Need of Lyrics
Posted this in another thread on accident. Here’s a mid/uptempo idea I’ve had if anyone wants to add lyrics. I’m thinking a call to worship.

@Reid Parrott I know what you mean about the bridge! I was really struggling with that too. My first thought was - it sounds like Jon wants to sing the same line (4 syllables) over and over and over. But I hate mindless repetition... then I randomly got these stupid lines stuck in my head - "Turn the lights on. Take your shoes off. He is holy." 😆 I eventually pushed through to find a Trinitarian bridge, which complements the God alone emphasis in the chorus, which I note you've also adopted! 💛 I really like your line "Fix our eyes on you". I wonder if your lyrics could also take on an overtly Trinitarian tone? "Fix our eyes on you" is clearly a reference to Jesus (Heb 12); you've mentioned "Your Spirit"... Perhaps v1 = Father; v2 = Son; v3 = Spirit? Do you want to play around with that idea? Or shall I?

@Reid Parrott I did feel inspired, but it hasn't translated into progress. I've been tinkering with the lyrics on-and-off for probably an hour, and I'm not happy with it - there's no real flow to it... so, I'll shelve this one for now. 'Til next time!
Taste And See
This song is based off of Psalm 34. Would love to hear your feedback and suggestions. Verse 1 As we come to Your table with our hunger and our thirst We come longing for more than bread alone We are led to Your feast where now our cup will overflow Taste and see all the goodness He has shown Chorus Oh taste and see that the Lord is good Our Shepherd King giving all we need In our highest joys, through our deepest pain Oh taste and see that the Lord is good Verse 2 Many are the afflictions of the righteous ones You’ve called Oh how long will this heavy trial last? I will cry for Your help Yes He will hear our every plea You will hold us until these nights are past Verse 3 Come and sing of His praises every morning day and night With each breath bless the Lord in all your days I will sing in the valleys, I will sing on mountain tops Through the joys, through the pain I lift my praise

Howdy folks, I'm from earth, but my citizenship is in heaven. I live in SE Australia. For fun I like to play cricket - it's a bit like baseball but weirder and takes ages. Here's a pic of where I write. I'm embarrassed how messy it is - probably explains why I haven't been feeling too creative lately!! Thanks, Jon, for the open invitation!

Sadly, 9am your time is midnight my time. I would be like Eli in 1 Samuel 3:2 “One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.” So unless the LORD does a Samuel on me (verse 4) I will not see you in 12 hours. Hope it goes well! Thank you, Jon, for organising this. In Christ, Kingsley.
