Suggestions for Opposing a large broiler farm being built next door
Looking for suggestions: A neighbouring farm that owns full sections of land near my family is planning to go from mixed agricultural (Cattle, Pigs, Chickens, Sheep, etc.) to a chicken farm. Going from 12, 000 to 240, 000 broilers while cutting all other animals other than poultry. I am planning to write a letter to oppose the application. I am looking for advice on good agricultural & environmental impact reason to list in my opposition. This is a farm that already caused a lot of us to lose our water aquifer that the well was on due to contamination. Any help to oppose the newest application would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps scour the Internet on people who have opposed large poultry or any kind of livestock plants. We had one open, not too long ago for Costco somewhere not too far from here and I know there was a big hubbub about it. That would’ve been in Omaha, Nebraska. See what some people might’ve said or did I know they have regulations on smell, wind, drift, etc., etc. and certain things like that. Also permits from the USDA etc. have to be processed and accepted. Look up through them what the parameters are. Hope that helps. You dig a little deeper.

I have raised poultry, ducks, and rabbits for my family for over 25 years, but I only had enough for myself and a few other families nearby. And raised a few cows, sheep, pigs, goats and horses. Curious to see what you find out.

If you had a chance to move out of the United States, where would you go and why?

@Vicky Rleon I was there with fear, until I did a deep dive into it. Neuroscience is extremely fascinating. But if you say it out loud, your words have power over your own being. I was raised with very few spoken words. Words have tons of power over our own being. Just.say out loud, “I am not afraid”. Let it settle, and the more you say it, the more your own mind believes it.

@Stefano Creatini so you wouldn’t go back to Argentina? Are there other locations you’ve considered beside Uruguay, why/why not? I have nothing to add as far as living anywhere else except for Colorado. I loved it, but the lack of water is beyond concern. I believe you have a young family, how easy is it to relocate to Uruguay or anywhere in South America for anyone who is not from there?

From Kicked Off Land to Paid-Off
I want to zoom out and give more context on why this book exists and where it actually came from. I bought my Paonia homestead at roughly $710,000. On paper, that number alone scares most people out of the idea of land ownership. But through creative structure, deal design, and income strategy, I was able to practically pay it off in about 18 months. That didn’t happen because I was lucky. It happened because I learned things the hard way. Before that deal, I got kicked off my dream permaculture farm. Not metaphorically. Literally displaced. Each time was expensive, destabilizing, and humbling. I made early mistakes around ownership structure, leverage, timelines, and assuming “it’ll work out” without control. Those lessons burned years and a lot of money. Over the last five years, I’ve been deep in real estate full time using creative financing. Seller financing, structuring deals, finding hidden leverage, and understanding how money actually moves. I ran a real estate investment company, and I’ve seen hundreds of deals from the inside. I’ve watched what works, what quietly fails, and what traps people financially for decades. This book is me compressing all of that into one place. Not theory. Not motivation. Not influencer nonsense. It’s everything I would hand to a younger version of myself before he made six-figure mistakes, trusted the wrong structures, or assumed banks were the only option. If you apply even part of what’s in there correctly, it can literally save you hundreds of thousands of dollars over the life of a homestead. The goal isn’t just buying land. The goal is buying land without becoming land-poor, without losing control, and without setting yourself up for stress you didn’t see coming. That’s why I wrote it. That’s why I stand behind it fully. And that’s why I say, without exaggeration, it’s worth its weight in gold for the right person. The book is linked here in the community and available on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GDRR5FP5
