Advancements In Perfumery (Givaudan)
Givaudan and the Idea of β€œSleeping Nose Receptors” Givaudan is doing some really interesting work in the science side of perfumery. They are studying what some people call β€œsleeping” or β€œsilent” smell receptors in the nose. The way I understand it, our nose has hundreds of smell receptors, but science still has not completely matched every receptor to the exact scent molecules that activate it. Some receptors are difficult to study because they do not respond strongly in the lab, or they barely respond at all. That is why they are sometimes looked at as β€œsilent” receptors. Givaudan found a way to make some of these receptors more sensitive during testing. By doing that, they were able to wake up or detect responses from receptors that were not really showing activity before. A simple way to picture it is this: Imagine the nose has hundreds of locked doors. The scent molecules are the keys. Scientists know the doors are there, but some of them will not open in the lab, so nobody really knows what keys fit them. Givaudan found a way to make some of those doors easier to test, and now they can start seeing which scent molecules fit which receptors. To me, this is a big deal for the future of fragrance. This does not mean Givaudan is literally spraying something in your nose to wake up receptors. It means they are learning more about the hidden parts of how we smell. They are trying to understand why certain materials smell fresh, musky, woody, creamy, floral, calming, clean, addictive, or realistic. For perfumery, this could eventually give perfumers more precision. Instead of only relying on trial and error, experience, and artistic instinct, they may be able to understand more clearly why certain molecules create certain effects. That could help create better musks, better citrus effects, more realistic naturals, smoother woods, cleaner replacements for restricted materials, and maybe even fragrances designed around mood, comfort, relaxation, or sleep. In my opinion, this is where fragrance is heading: part art, part science.

I was thinking back to the call with @Marcelo Oillataguerre and the discussion about Civets and history. (Maybe there are things we don't detect today to the levels we might have thousands of years ago). If they unlock these receptors, perhaps we could detect more scents that are not on the current perfumery wheel. Think about a dog and the ability to detect people, drugs, diseases, etc. perhaps we have some of those abilities just muted.

@Marcelo Oillataguerre what might be the next region of the world to influence fragrance (come into fashion or maybe a resurgence from somewhere else)? We have seen Middle Eastern dominating and for some that is preferable to classic French perfumery. There also seems to be a general trend in escalating pricing by both designers (Extraits for example) and niche do you see that continuing at the rapid pace?.

@Lon Chaneyfield I could see that, after my purchase of Nishane Wúlōng ChÑ X (I know they are Turkish perfumers) where it is in the Green Tea notes forward and China based scent.
BOS Weekly Member Shoutouts πŸ‘
Brothers, here are a few standout posts from the BOS community this week. 1. @Lon Chaneyfield Post: https://www.skool.com/bos/my-scent-journey-always-moving-up-to-the-real-thing Big shoutout to Lon for sharing his scent journey and connecting fragrance to a bigger life pattern β€” wanting the real thing, appreciating quality, and understanding the difference between copying the look and owning the experience. That is exactly the kind of deeper fragrance conversation that makes BOS valuable. 2. @Renato Carotti Post: https://www.skool.com/bos/the-hunt-for-dead-stock-tober-chasing-discontinued-fragrances-without-losing-your-nose-or-your-wallet Shoutout to Renato for bringing a useful and grounded take on discontinued fragrances. Instead of just hyping rarity, he reminded everyone to understand what scent profiles they actually love before chasing bottles. Practical, thoughtful, and helpful. 3. @Eduardo Figueroa Post: https://www.skool.com/bos/sad-challenging-times-ahead-prada-lhomme Big shoutout to Eduardo for trusting the community with something deeply personal. His post reminded everyone that BOS is not only about fragrance β€” it is also about the men behind the bottles, and the support this group can offer during hard seasons. 4. @Stephen DeMent Post: https://www.skool.com/bos/should-we-continue-using-the-word-oriental-in-perfumery Shoutout to Stephen for starting a thoughtful discussion around language, history, and perfumery. He brought personal background and context to the topic, which helped elevate the conversation beyond simple opinion.

I like these call outs since I miss some of these and probably need to follow a few more people here. It was great to read each of these.
Goldfield and Banks Bohemian Lime plus Escentric Molecules M + Iris
Utilizing EM ingredients of Iso E Super plus Iris Pallida Absolute to lengthen Goldfield and Banks Bohemian Lime. The mixture of woody floral and citrus aromatic families is a good experiment. So far it is a good marriage. BL is top notes of Australian Finger Lime, Coriander then mid notes of Bergamot, Haitian Vetiver, Moroccan Cedar, Patchouli (Indonesia), then base notes of Australian Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Amber
Mancera Soleil D'Italie
Soleil d'Italie by Mancera is a Floral Woody Musk fragrance for women and men. Soleil d'Italie was launched in 2019. The nose behind this fragrance is Pierre Montale. Top notes are Bitter Orange, Lime, Calabrian bergamot, Mandarin Orange, Pink Pepper and Cardamom; middle notes are Watery Notes, Bulgarian Rose and Patchouli Leaf; base notes are White Musk, Cedar, Ambergris, Vetiver and Guaiac Wood. Part of my summer collection and recommended by some BOS members. For the first hour this projects about 2 feet pepper and citrus clearly approach. I would say this is a step above French Riviera in terms of refined summer scent. I've worn this a few times and six sprays is plenty. This is a long lasting scent and after the opening the heart does show through with the rose and watery notes. I'm not a patchouli guy and I don't get it much with this one. The musk and ambergris provide a nice landing for the base along with hints of cedar.
