The Electron Symphony: How Your Gut Bacteria and Mitochondria Co-Author Your Energy, Performance, and Health
If we were sitting around a dinner table and someone asked me what actually runs the human body, I would not start with hormones or calories or even muscles. I would start with electrons. Because if you zoom out far enough, health is an energy story. And if you zoom in far enough, it becomes an electron story. Somewhere between those two views lives one of the most powerful partnerships inside you, the constant conversation between your mitochondria and your gut bacteria. For years we treated these as separate topics. Gut health was about bloating and probiotics. Mitochondria were something you learned about in high school biology and then forgot. But what we now understand is that they are deeply intertwined. They regulate each other through energy flow, oxygen gradients, immune signaling, and chemical messengers. They do not operate in isolation. They dance. Let’s begin at the foundation.Mitochondria are not just power plants. They are controlled electron transfer systems. Their primary job is to move electrons through a series of protein complexes embedded in their inner membrane. This is called the electron transport chain. Imagine a row of stepping stones across a river. Electrons hop from one stone to the next. As they move, they pump protons across the membrane. This creates an electrical charge difference. That charge difference is membrane potential. It is literally a battery. That battery powers a molecular turbine called ATP synthase. When protons flow back across the membrane, the turbine spins and produces ATP. ATP is what your body uses to contract muscle, fire neurons, repair tissue, and maintain barrier integrity in your gut. Underneath strength, cognition, and immunity is voltage. Underneath voltage is electron flow. Now enter the microbiome. Your gut bacteria digest fibers you cannot break down. When they ferment these fibers, they produce short chain fatty acids, especially butyrate. Butyrate is absorbed by colon cells and converted into acetyl CoA, which enters the Krebs cycle. The Krebs cycle strips electrons from nutrients and loads them onto carriers called NADH and FADH2. These carriers deliver electrons directly into the mitochondrial electron transport chain. In plain language, your gut bacteria are helping determine how many electrons enter your cellular battery system.

NAD Supplementation
In the latest DDT Method podcast with @Anthony Castore , Anthony discussed NAD supplementation. What I found interesting is that Anthony seemed to be against NAD supplementation via NAD+ and its precursors if I understood correctly, and a more appropriate approach would be to instead use a combination of 5 amino and 1MNA. He suggested using 5 amino pre workout and 1MNA on rest days in the evening. Anthony - would you be able to expand on your thoughts regarding NAD supplementation given it seems like a given in the longevity community that you supplement with NAD+ (injection or IV) or its precursors (NMN, NR).

THE HIDDEN LANGUAGE OF YOUR MITOCHONDRIA: HOW CARDIOLIPIN, REDOX PHASE, AND SS-31 TEACH US TO SEE THE CELL DIFFERENTLY
If you’ve ever watched a great coach or a great clinician work, you’ll notice something they don’t stare harder; they see differently. They aren’t simply looking for more data; they’re trying to understand the rhythm beneath the data. Biology, especially mitochondrial biology, is a dance long before it becomes a number on a lab report. This article is about learning to see that dance. To understand how SS-31, methylene blue, ketone esters, and even your training decisions interact with real cellular dynamics, you need to know one thing above all else: Biology doesn’t run on quantity, it runs on phase. This is the part that confuses even very smart people. We’re trained to think that oxidative stress = bad, antioxidants = good, more oxygen = good, more ATP = good. But life is rhythmic, not linear. Your mitochondria aren’t furnaces they’re oscillators. They need to pulse. They need to switch between states. They need to signal, respond, tighten, release, and tighten again. This is why a supplement, a peptide, or a drug can work beautifully in one phase of physiology and completely derail things in another. To understand this, we need to talk about one of the most underrated molecules in all of human physiology: cardiolipin. CARDIOLIPIN: THE CONDUCTOR OF THE MITOCHONDRIAL ORCHESTRA Cardiolipin is a special lipid that lives almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. If the mitochondrial membrane were a concert hall, cardiolipin would be the acoustic paneling that allows the orchestra to play in tune. It has four fatty acid tails, which is extremely rare most lipids have two. That design allows it to shape the membrane into cristae, those elegant folds where electron transport happens. These folds aren’t random architecture; they control the spacing, alignment, and speed of electron flow. Without cardiolipin, the ETC complexes would be like a bunch of musicians sitting in the wrong seats. Even more importantly, cardiolipin is both a sensor and a switch. When it is oxidized in the right way, it helps signal adaptation. When it is oxidized in the wrong way, it collapses mitochondrial membrane potential, releases cytochrome c, and pushes the cell toward apoptosis. This is why tools that interact with cardiolipin like SS-31 are profoundly powerful but profoundly phase-dependent. They’re not like taking creatine or magnesium; they actively alter the structural language of the mitochondria.

I was watching a pod cast where the podcaster was talking about mega dosing this a couple times a year to get rid of senecese cells. Does anyone have experience with this or know if it is a real functional option. I just read an old article by Anthony o er on Chris Duffins endless evolution about layering Foxo4 Dri amd other peptides. Really enjoyed the article
