Laser
I’m glad you had info on lasers. I learned how to grade with a peep scope and a pencil and paper. I was embarrassed to ask how to use one since I’ve been doing this for so long. Now I know how to use both.
What Civil Construction Actually Is (And Why Most People Never Learn It)
Civil construction isn’t “running an excavator.” It’s an entire system that most people only ever see one small piece of. This school exists because there is no single place that explains how all of it connects: • Grades, layout, and survey • Soils, ground conditions, and compaction • Pipe systems — storm, sanitary, and water • Drawings, plans, and specifications • Safety, risk, and consequences • Tools, methods, and why they’re used • Sequence — what comes first and why Most people learn one role, on one crew, and never see the full picture. The result: – People can do tasks – But don’t understand why they’re doing them – Or how one mistake affects the entire job The Excavation Academy is built like a school system. Kindergarten → High school → real understanding. We start with what civil construction is, then break it into clear parts, then show how everything connects. This isn’t about machines. It’s about understanding the industry as a whole. No hype. No influencer content. Just real-world civil construction knowledge — in one place. 👇 Introduce yourself below: Where are you in the industry right now, and what do you want to understand better?

I am an operator I’ve been doing it for 7 yrs now. I’ve mostly done underground main line. I currently work at McCarthy Construction. I know osha standards what tapes mean etc my main goal is to learn how to run crews and figure out costs and more. I love being an operator but I’m also hungry and want to be running the show some day.

Welcome to The Excavation Academy. This community is about how the work actually gets done — pipe, prep, compaction, grades, safety, and the details that separate clean jobs from call-backs. No influencer crap. No textbook theory. Just real-world excavation and civil knowledge. 👇 Drop a comment and introduce yourself: Where are you working (city / region)? What do you do right now? (laborer, operator, foreman, owner, etc.) What do you want to get better at this year? This group will grow based on real questions and real problems from the field. Let’s build it properly.

Hey I’m Jose Frias. Ive been an Operator in the Southern California Operating engineers union for 7 yrs now. I mostly do under ground utility. I’m looking to eventually be a rare sighting an Operator that’s a Super or alternative be an owner operator. In either case I need more knowledge in logistics and running a team.
