SAVI Method Summer Camp
Hi Coaches, We host a 3-day youth basketball camp in the summer, as many of you probably do, to connect with the younger athletes in our area and get them interested in playing basketball. In the past we have done the typical on-air skill development you see at many basketball summer camps, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success running a camp using more SAVI methods of teaching a group that varies a lot in age and skill. Any ideas that have worked for you would be great as we would love to do something more engaging than the usual drills but have struggled to come up with things that work for the variety of kids that we have over the short amount of time that we have with them. Thank you
CHIN DEVELOPMENT
Hey I met with a coach recently and wanted your opinion on what kind of skill development anyone is doing if they run chin. Is it different post moves. Is it retreat dribbles that gets to a attack again. Just wanted to pick some brains for this.

It kind of depends on how you are wanting to use the chin actions. If you have a bigger team and plan to post up off the back cut then working some post moves out of that catch can be useful. If you are looking to use the flare more then training shooting off of the flare and the reads on driving the flare would be more beneficial. The footwork of shooting off the flare was a particular difficulty for us as our kids hadn't practiced backpedaling into a 3 much before. It helps to work on the skills in the context of the offense so the kids can see when and how they will use what you are working on instead of working the skill in isolation.
Weakside Cutting Rules?
Just curious what everyone does with weakside players in certain situations when playing conceptually? Like if the ball is driven baseline, do you have a set rule? What about middle drives? What about on post catches? Thanks

It depends on the player, the defense, and our offensive alignment. Typically, it's a read for us but it can be an automatic based on skillset. If we are 5 out and get a middle drive then we tell our corner man that if his man turns his head to him to look at the drive then look to cut. If it's a non-shooter in the corner then that cut might be automatic whether the defense is turned or not. On a baseline drive in 5 out we will look to cut from the slot or 45 if the defense has their head turned/the player is a non-shooter. On drives in a 4 out alignment we will usually replace the perimeter cuts with spacing from our post in the dunker spot. Middle drives they look to space around the opposite block/dunker area and on baseline drives they space to the front of the rim. We treat post catches as perimeter drives to the spot that the post caught on. So if a post catches around the block area we would treat that as a baseline drive and look to cut the slot/45. A high post catch is treated as a middle drive and we look to cut the corners.

Is the shooting system a paid course? I want to make sure I have access to this community but can't remember if that one counts or not.

@Frank Fogg great, thanks!
Offense
Can you still run drive in space with a team that can’t beat their guy off the dribble?

We did! We struggled against larger, physical teams but it worked very well against. We needed some off ball actions (we used Princeton) to soften the defense up and then the rose series worked great for keeping the advantage and flow.
