A few pretty well-known names in the business coaching space messaged me last week. Same question, slightly different wording: "Did you see OpenAI is killing custom GPTs? What do we do?" If you missed it: OpenAI announced they're retiring custom GPTs. No new ones. Existing ones get pushed into a migration to "plugins" over the next few months, and the custom actions don't even come with you. So a lot of people spent the last two years building their whole AI "stack" on GPTs… and just got handed an eviction notice. My honest reaction? I shrugged. Not because I don't care. Because nothing changed for me. Every GPT I've built, and every GPT my clients have built, still runs inside LFOS. Same as last month. Same as next month. And that's the part I want to talk about, because it's the thing nobody selling you a "custom GPT" wants to say out loud. Here's how I think about AI in a business. Three layers. 1️⃣ Thinkers. That's your GPTs. Prompts, instructions, knowledge. They think. 2️⃣ Workers. That's agents. They actually do things. Follow up, pull the numbers, draft the email, etc 3️⃣ The environment. The place where the thinkers and workers live. Where your roadmap, numbers, clients, pipeline, and content all sit in one spot so the workers have something to work on. Most coaches have a handful of thinkers. A few have a worker or two. Almost nobody has the environment. And without it, your thinkers are just chatbots sitting in someone else's building. Which is totally fine… right up until the landlord changes the locks. (I built on ground I didn't control once. 2008. Cost me half a million dollars. I'm a little sensitive about it.) So here's the shift: A tool you don't own isn't infrastructure. It's a lease. GPTs will come and go. Agents will get better every month. The models will swap out underneath all of it. None of that matters if you own the environment they run in. If you don't… you're renting. And a lot of people just found out what renting costs.
