The number of times I had to spend more than I thought because I cut something the wrong way or did not pay attention to my joinery has resulted in me buying more wood than my project planned. The way around this was to make those practice cuts on cheap stock. I hated to slow down to do that but I do it now anytime I am working with pricey hardwood.
