Dark Mode Feature on Websites
I love that this site has "dark mode" I'm starting to get migraines spending hours on the Coursera IBM Data Science Certification. Is there a way to transform a website into dark mode with user tools?

@Ingrid Barnaby Wow youre using a textbook. That's rough!! Im doing an online course. I'm having a hard time of whether to learn "from scratch" or just use learn to use the tools created for data science.

@Phillip Bateman Humans have such a hard time "caring" about a problem until it personally effects them. Imagine being unable to access the power of the internet because you are blind. I saw this emphasis when I was taking courses through freeCodeAcademy.com and I never realized before they tools available and the framework being created to make the internet accessible.
DeepSeek extension in VS code?
I have added chatgpt extension in VS code. It can complete an entire for loop in python, its amazing. Has anyone incorporated DeepSeek into VS code? I know DeepSeek is "free" but there has to be a price. If you use it, how compromised is our data.

@Japmandeep Ahluwalia I dont mind you making fun of my humble beginnings. I feel safe behind a computer screen to admit how much of a newbie I am, and I hope its inspiration to anyone out there who is also a beginner to know they are not alone. From what I have experienced, I dont think AI, at this point is as useful to an advanced programmer as a beginner for coding purposes. I imagine its similar to bringing on a junior programmer that needs its worked looked over and corrected. There are diminishing returns when using AI for coding and where will the next generation of AI supervisors come from. Beginners like me.

@Grégory Martin Thank you!!
Can we share knowledge in a time of scarcity?
I remember the abundance of the 90s when the internet and software engineering was the new gold rush. I used to think open sources was about generosity and flower power but its really about efficiency. When you share knowledge you get DeepSeek. If you dont share knowledge, people will steal it and then you get DeepSeek.

@Daniel Fonte That's true, but you are more likely to reach the goal when there are thousands of people are "volunteering" the work on it. No one can afford to pay the whole world to work on it. But do these "voluteers" get a return on thier investment?

@Damian Dąbrowski So the new capital for startup is just a computer and time. Unfortunately, if you have a family and a mortgage you might not have this capital but for those who can be supported for the time it takes to create this startup its an unprecedent level of access to opportunity.
What is the Minimum Skill to Provide Value as a Free Collaborator
What level is required to donate work? I would love to collaborate with anyone for free but I'm only a beginner. I've completed tutorials in python, java script and react. I can take tutorial after tutorial but I think I really learn best by having a project goal to work towards.

@Michal Ad Thanks for your response. That encourages me so much. I agree just working on something is no substitute for learning. But it take sooo long to "produce" something I was wondering if I'm taking the wrong approach. I make a goal and when I come to a part that is outside my knowledge base I have to go and learn that part. Its a long slog.

What I thought was a simple project is becoming more and more complicated :) I'm embarassed to put it out there to put my ignorance and naivete on full display. I was orginally working on trying to just get data from Track master to create my own handicapping insights. Then when I looked at the data I realized, geesh, the data seem very inaccurate. Sensors are able to predicts the leaders at certain calls accurately but the performance of horses behind the leader seem to be innaccurate. I want to see if there are ways to use machine vision to more accurately time running times for horses in a race.
HIRING: Freelance AI-Developer(s)
Hey everybody! My own freelancing practice is getting to a stage where I need some extra hands for client work, and I think it would be a good opportunity for those here looking to get their freelancing off the ground. I have a few projects on the table around document automation, e.g., generating high quality reports and proposals using LLMs. Must-haves: - Backend/API development with Python - At least some (6mo+) frontend experience with TypeScript, and React or Next.js. - AI-engineering basics, i.e prompting, structured outputs and multi-step LLM-workflows. Nice-to-haves: - Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), on at least one major cloud platform (AWS/Azure/GCP), and deployment automation. - Experience processing documents with LLMs/OCR. - Retrieval optimization for RAG, and LLM-evals in general. In a nutshell, someone with mid-level seniority, time-zone ideally in EU or USA. DM me with your relevant info (cv/linkedin/github and rates), and we'll talk more. (: You can also check out my youtube at @johannesjolkkonen, to see some of the work I've done.
