Protein powder
I asked recently about recommended protein powders, and I have a follow up. But as it was a while ago I didn't want it to get lost down the feed, so starting a new thread. Has anyone tried True Nutrition? It seems like you can customise your own choices of base protein (I'm looking at beef, I can''t do whey), flavour & an extra boost. Don't seem to be too expensive. Thoughts about amino content for beef collagen @Shaun Womersley ? https://truenutrition.com/en-gb/products/protein-customizer

It's a bit tricky to find, but True Nutrition sell their flavourings separately too. So you can buy the unflavoured protein base and add a flavouring depending on what you fancy that day. Apparently the flavourings are also good in ice cream, yoghurt, coffee etc. I read 1/8 tsp in a pint of liquid so the 100ml bottle is going to last well. I think that's going to be my plan - my husband also wants to try this brand so we can share unflavoured base and choose our own flavour. https://truenutrition.com/en-gb/products/trueflavor-flavor-packs-100-grams The website is a bit crap though, work is needed to find ingredients, nutritional info and navigate in general. Shaun put a discount link above, I also saw code MUSCLE on a reel but haven't tried it yet.

@Shaun Womersley Do you think 100% beef isolate? I'm not sure what mix to make as I'm not sure what gives the best profile. Maybe adding whole egg?? Would be grateful for your thoughts.
Mitochondrial Fix Protocol
So I thought I'd document what I'm up to as I've felt crap for many years overall, sometimes just a little niggle. This is the protocol from https://derekpruski.substack.com/p/energy-peptides-course-complete-mitochondrial?utm_source=publication-search Realistic expectations by phase: Week 2-4 (Post-FOX04): - Slight improvement in baseline energy - Reduced inflammation feeling - Foundation cleaned Week 6 (End of SS-31 phase): - 20-40% better mitochondrial function - Noticeably better workouts - Improved recovery Week 10 (End of MOTS-c addition): - This is the big jump - Metabolic flexibility restored - Energy dramatically more stable - Fasted training comfortable - 50-70% total improvement from baseline Week 14 (End of NAD+ addition): - Mental clarity peaked - Full optimization beginning - 70-85% total improvement from baseline Week 20 (Full optimization maintained): - Peak benefits - 85-95% total improvement from baseline - New normal established - Can maintain or adjust as needed

@Daniel Parker can you tell us more about the mitochondria dysfunction you feel you were experiencing?

@Daniel Parker Thanks, that's really interesting. I'm glad things are looking positive and I'm enjoying reading about your experiments 😊
Update 07 Oct Quiet Day Today
So today I am still in the same position as my first quiet day post. Same format, no real sleep (1 hr blocks) between cold showers so I don't rip my skin off. 12 nights Your body cannot heal if you cannot sleep - that's why it's deemed torture. This is where the farce gets even better All the ordeal at the hospital and the stuff they did was a complete waste of time - they did their own generic blood panel, not what the GP ordered. ( So they say ) I have now seen both, and the GP lied ( made a mistake); they didn't request the others 😠 I should have asked them to run a hormone check as well while I was there and saved a few quid🤣 This was on the Friday They decided to give me some antibiotics and a stronger steroid cream/ointment and a strong antihistamine to help me sleep. Still bearing in mind I don't like or use any skin coverings, even long sleeves or trousers, but I have to take what I'm given. They didn't give me the antihistamines in the package ( made a mistake ) That's also a lie ( they had none and still have none in stock ) No alternative offered, so I ended up with Nytol It didn't work So now it's Mon, and I'm told to go back to the GP to do more bloods But they asked me to come down, knowing the sample van had already gone? Tuesday - A receptionist actually found 1 strip and left it at the pharmacy pickup Used last night; still the same format - no change. Wed - still no contact regarding blood results, so I checked my app and got the receptionist to forward via email. TBH, they are meaningless after this length of time - lack of sleep - and amount of inflammation. It also compromises any further course due to the time in these conditions So nearly 2 weeks ago - no idea what is or what may have caused it Today - exactly the same but in an even more unhealthy position skin-wise. Just analysed all my blood markers myself My bloods show no infection, no vasculitis and normal inflammatory markers. If they had given me Prednisolone as I requested at the outset - 3 days max of this shit and it would be done.

Sorry to hear you’ve had a tricky few days @Shaun Womersley. I hope you’ll be feeling better very soon.
Post 6 · Where "70–80% fat" actually comes from
The number is real. It's just borrowed from a completely different situation. It's the classic ketogenic diet. Mayo Clinic, 1921. For drug-resistant epilepsy. Roughly a 4:1 ratio, about 90% of energy from fat, prescribed at maintenance energy to growing children with no fat store to draw on. The percentage is arithmetic fallout from suppressing protein and carbohydrate at maintenance energy. It was never a therapeutic fat dose. No dose-ranging trial has ever isolated the fat fraction at matched carbohydrate restriction. The "metabolic advantage" has also been measured, and it's smaller than the story suggests. Switching to a ketogenic diet raised energy expenditure by roughly 240 to 630 kJ (57 to 151 kcal) a day, and the chamber-measured rise was transient. A small apple's worth. Or, for the carnivores, about one to two eggs' worth. And the decisive finding: an isocaloric 80%-fat ketogenic diet slowed body-fat loss in a metabolic ward (Hall et al., 2016; R§27). One more thing worth correcting. The 70–80% figure is widely attributed to a named carnivore advocate. The archived transcript of him saying it contains no percentage. His stated rule is to eat fatty meat until it stops tasting good, with fat titrated to stool consistency. If you're going to quote someone, quote what they said. At 40% body fat, most of the "70–80% fat" is already on the body. Eating it again is double-counting. IMO

I've wanted the 'eat more fat' to be true as lets face it, it's delicious. I quickly learnt that this mantra didn't work...it just lead to tight clothes and a very squishy waist. I suspect that this encouragement comes from the fact that going low carb/keto/carnivore is tough for a lot of people and eating lots of fat makes them feel better in the moment. Replacing fast food with copious amounts of fat, helps psychologically. Big dollops of butter on a fatty rib eye is quite frankly heaven for our dopamine driven brains. That fat makes us feel as happy as eating a pizza/burger/kebab. It's replacing one dopamine spike (addiction) for another. I think it really helps those in the beginning of their journey, particularly if you are clinically obese, and I can understand why this has become the narrative. Further down the line people realise all the double cream, cheese, butter & milk powder isn't working and they need to kiss it goodbye. Honesty in the beginning that the extra fat isn't required would help people in so many ways, but I think it's used as a crutch by so many people coming from chronically poor diets.
Protein powder recommendations
My husband is looking for protein powder recommendations. He doesn’t like all the sweet chocolate/vanilla/strawberry types; he’s looking for something which is more like a squash flavour rather than a milkshake! And not too sweet ideally. He uses the lemon ESN whey one at the moment but they keep hiking the price up. His bro gym sells them but from what I’ve seen on the shelf, it looks like a lot of garbage ingredients. Any recommendations?
