Record player
. I need to upgrade my record player. I have a basic Victrola that is skipping with my new record club albums. Looking for recommendations for a new one…thinking $200 range.

Another Audio Technica fan here and they've got great $200 and under options. If you want to spend a little bit more maybe look at Fluance. They've got an opening model at $249 https://www.fluance.com/rt80-high-fidelity-vinyl-turntable-record-player-with-premium-cartridge-diamond-needle
Hotel Crocodile Lobby Sessions
If you're in the Seattle area and you haven't checked out a Hotel Crocodile Lobby Session yet, you owe it to yourself to try one soon. Lobby Sessions is an ongoing series with up-and-coming local and touring bands. A few shots below from last night's Fem du lit show with Ifadero opening. Fe du lit is the solo project of Francesca Eluhu, who also fronts the jazz-soul-rock ensemble Day Soul Exquisite. I previously have seen Forty Feet Tall and Tres Leches at the lobby sessions, both amazing shows as well. Lots of video from these up on Hotel Crocodile's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@HotelCrocodile

Friday 5x5
Back on my Game Theory this week. And a lot of local. Fun fact: Mike Vernon Davis was involved with at least 3 of these records.

@William Cremin I did! I love them and Sister Swimmer and Mega Cat. A very fun lineup for me.
First 5X5 of 2026 listening
I feel like I’ve been more adamant to have focused listening time as this new year has began. While I don’t always track my listening on Last.FM, I enjoy these visual ways of looking back after getting turned on to it from the posts shared by @Howie Cohen With a mix of reissues and new records already set for the next couple months, I’m excited to get lost in new songs and rediscover old favorites.

I love seeing these. I got hooked on them in a Ska group I'm in, and found it a great way to both explore more Ska but also the great variety of artists shared on these in that group well beyond the Ska genre.
First Show
I've considered doing a Morning Show about this but I only have 3 hours. It would take me 3 months. So mine was 16 years old, Jane's Addiction with Mary's Danish opening at Eastern Washington University. I remember walking in to "Coming Down the Mountain" and seeing bodies flying in the air, everyone wearing black, just absolute MAYHEM and all I wanted to do was more of this! I stayed out the pit that day and just stood there in awe to be seeing and hearing the music from a band I loved. I was HOOKED. I think they played 30 minutes because Perry was a mess but I didn't know any better and in fact was shocked when I saw a band play longer! Also first show in Seattle? Pixies. Moore Theater.

Alright, time to date myself here. Styx, at the OG Seattle Center Arena in 1978. They played back to back nights in October and I don't remember which one I went to, but it was quite an experience. I still will listen to an occasional Styx tune, and mostly blame the show Freaks & Geeks for that. Related: I once got roasted and blocked by Dennis DeYoung in the Facebook "I Love Power Pop" group for resharing a hilarious video made by one of the admins of the group, that I now bless your feed with:

@Andrew Martin I kind of love the idea of crowd surfers at a TMBG shows. I've never seen that (and I've seen a lot of TMBG shows)! My mind is racing with which songs might get that happening, but I hope it's something completely bizarre like Shoehorn with Teeth.

That "pit dad" up front at the show. 40+ years of live PNW music and still going strong. I want to tell you about this band I saw...
