Quick thoughts on the consolidated routine Mike Mentzer used with a handful of clients.
That style of training was mainly applied to people with very low recovery ability or people who could train so brutally hard that they dug a deep enough neurological hole to actually need that much downtime. In my experience, that second category is rare. Not impossible — just rare. Most lifters simply don’t train with the level of neurological efficiency or intensity required to justify extremely long rest periods. For the majority, 5–7 days between hitting the same muscle group is more than sufficient and often works better. Personally, I’ve never trained a fully consolidated routine myself. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong — it just means it was never widely applied. Mike only used it with a very small number of people, and for specific reasons. So if you’re one of those few good men, so to speak — go for it. Just be honest about which category you’re actually in. — Markus

I recently started using my own version of Mike's Consolidation Routine for a number of different reasons: 1. It was taking me too long (5-7 days) to recover between workouts when following the Heavy Duty program. Because of that I wasn't training each muscle group regularly enough. Creating my own version of the consolidation routine has allowed me to target more muscle groups in each workout leading to faster recovery overall. 2. My goals changed; I initially wanted to build muscle to enhance my body composition but I'm now training for strength. Frankly, I don't care what I look like, I just want to be strong and mobile as I age. This should be the primary focus for every person over 40, in my opinion. 3. Changing to a consolidated routine forced me to focus on the best compound exercises that are going to give me the most bang for buck; deadlifts, squats, dips, pullups. No more wasted time and energy on isolation exercises. The above is what works for me at my age (believe me, I've experimented with lots of different routines, and exercises) and I'm much happier for it. Happy to hear your thoughts, Markus.

@Dan Deadman, don't we all! 😆 Luckily, I'm genetically quite gifted (tall, naturally slim and toned), but with each passing year it gets harder to keep looking good.
