One thing that I think about as a former board member and co-founder of our club is what could cross a line into compensation. Right now, we have paid for outside coaches to come in for clinics and to be a resource as independent contractors and our “regular” coaches and those in training have been member-volunteers. If we started compensating us/them, it could beg the question if we/they are employees. If we were to “hire and employ” coaches internally, then we would also have to structure in Human Resources. As a 501c3, that increases our admin costs which many folks look at when they are donating to our organization. Right now, we can say we are a volunteer-run organization. Depending on how your club is structured, you may have a different experience. That all said, This year our board decided to waive the membership dues for lead coaches.
