Homework: Inclement weather experiences
What is the scariest weather-related experience you've ever encountered on the water? How would you make sure that you and your crew stay safe in an unexpected, weather-related situation?

@Gina Fortunato The water in Revenna was very susceptible to wind! I also have the alert on my weather apps set for a lightening alert within 10 miles of my location. Technology can be very helpful.
Homework: On-water interactions with other boaters
If you practice where other boaters (especially motor boaters) are present, make sure you know what the relevant rules of the waterways are. How do you think others with whom you share your waterway(s) perceive dragon boats (i.e. as welcome, an annoyance, etc.)? How could the relationship between dragon boaters and other types of recreational boaters be improved?

@Gina Fortunato I've gotten hooked a couple of times with someone fishing from where they weren't supposed to be and I didn't see the line until it was too late. Glad it has only ever caught my clothes. Novice Kayakers also need a wide berth LOL.
Homework: Capsize drills (and simulations)
Has your club/crew ever staged a capsize drill? If yes, what was the protocol and how would you improve it, if at all? If no, how would you structure one?

@Monica Blaney Very well thought out! Also take into consideration options that you could do in place of a full capsize drill. If your team or the city doesn't approve of a full capsize there are still aspects of it that you can do to prepare your crew.

@Gina Fortunato there was a good video posted of a capsize drill, let me see if I can find it. A team doesn't need to do drill if the conditions, resources, etc., do not permit one. I did not do one with my team because the river often has a high current and it would not have been safe enough. But talking through it is also very helpful. As well, if your team has access to a pool, you can also talk through aspects and have them practice regrouping and getting to the side of the pool.
Season so far?
For many it's the start of the Dragon Boat season. How's it going so far? Any good gossip? 😁
