πŸ—“οΈ Mark Your Calendars for June 28
We've got a special day planned that you don't want to miss! A Mini Dragon Boat SUMMIT It kicks off at 10am EST with a welcome and meet 'n greet, then there will be sessions every hour until about 5pm. Sessions on everything from steering, recruiting to grow your club or team, coaching basics, what to watch for as a coach and how to structure your video review, and opportunities to ask all your weirdest questions about anything and everything (dragon boat related) of course! We've taken all your feedback and are putting together the agenda and session descriptions, but wanted to get the date out there so you can plan. πŸ—“οΈ Sunday, June 28 ⏰ 10am - 5pm(ish) Eastern πŸ’Ά $20 to attend (replays included in reg fee) How to attend? We'll be creating a new "course" in the classroom that will be the summit container. When it's live, you can pay your reg fee right there and be good to go. All the individual sessions will be put on the calendar, and accessible to you once you've paid your fee. Replays will available to all registrants, but it will be a much better experience if you come LIVE. What questions do you have?

Homework: Prepping for races at the race site
In the comments below tell us: 1. The steps you'd take to get ready for steering a race.Β Β  2. How you'd prepare for a 200 m vs a 2k.

@Will Bober the PFD thing is a great idea - there's often confusion around what's acceptable and what's not (in terms of full vs inflatable/belt). You make a lot of good calls about 200m/2K prep before getting to the race site... anything you'd add for once you're AT the race site, especially if it's a site that you're encountering for the first time?

@Lesley Blyth roger that!
Homework: How would you handle a collision + capsize on the race course?
Crashes and capsizes on the race course can happen, especially in a 2K race. In the comments below, tell us how you'd handle this scenario. If this HAS happened to you while you were steering, tell us how you handled it and what you'd do differently (if anything).

@Will Bober stopping the boat and not restarting the boat are two very different things tho. Was the rule then "end the race"??

@Will Bober solid points here. USDBF/IDBF protocol is always to do whatever you need to do to avoid collision so that's absolutely the right call. Impossible sometimes to do tho as you note, especially if you're sandwiched between two boats on a 2K turn. On the capsize - a lot of teams have a protocol for practice, but ditch it at the races, perhaps assuming that because it's a more controlled (I use that term loosely lol) environment that they don't have to worry about it. Great reminder to stick to it everywhere!
Ch-ch-ch-changes!!!
We originally started this community as a steering hub, but both Joann and I also love coaching paddlers and developing new coaches. So, over the coming months, we will be adding resources in both those realms. And we'd like YOU to help us shape that. So, tell us in the comments what you want the most support or training in! Answer the poll then expand in the comments. Which of these would you like to see us add next?

@Cleopatra Sorina Iliescu there really isn't one overarching style... it all depends on the coach and what they teach. And it can change cycle to cycle with the same coach too... depending on how the sport evolves, technical insights, crossover from other paddling disciplines, etc. You could have 4 Team USA coaches in the same cycle each teaching their own variations. So you really have to be adaptable and go into it with a beginner mindset. I was training with 22D in Montreal (with Team Canada premier men's coaches) when I made the cut for Team USA premier. Two COMPLETELY different styles and pretty much a total mind f*ck. But I had to adapt. That's really the pre-requisite for being a national paddler :) What prompted you to ask?

For many it's the start of the Dragon Boat season. How's it going so far? Any good gossip? 😁

@Christina Potter you will!! there is so much you can do in 4 weeks - but be careful not to overdo it either. More practice in such a short time is not always the best strategy. You got this!
