Skill vs Systems: Which One Actually Builds Freedom?
Every barber talks about getting better with the clippers cleaner fades, faster cuts, sharper lines. But here’s the truth most barbers never face: your skills can make you money… but your systems build your freedom. 🔍 Here’s the Difference: Skill gets you clients. Systems keep them coming back and allow you to scale. You can be the best barber in your city but if you don’t have systems for: - Client follow-ups - Booking & reminders - Pricing adjustments - Tracking income & retention - Reposting content & client photos you’ll always be busy but never truly free. 💡 Action Steps to Level Up Both: 1️⃣ Refine One Skill Each Week Record your next haircut. Watch it back like game film where did you waste time, where can you tighten technique? 👉 Example: Challenge yourself to cut 5 minutes faster without losing quality. 2️⃣ Build One System at a Time Don’t try to overhaul everything. Focus on one small system per week. 👉 Example: Create a client follow-up message that automatically goes out after every appointment through Square or text. 3️⃣ Track and Measure Progress Use a whiteboard, spreadsheet, or your phone notes. 👉 Log how many clients rebook each week, your average ticket, and your total hours worked. Numbers tell the truth. 4️⃣ Schedule a “Business Day” Each Week One day or even one hour dedicated only to the back end pricing, content planning, finances, and follow-ups. 👉 Treat your business like a business, not a hustle. Quick Reflection: Ask yourself this week: “If I stopped cutting for a week, would my business still make money or completely stop?” If the answer is stop, it’s time to start building systems. 💬 Let’s Talk: What’s been harder for you personally leveling up your skill or dialing in your systems? Drop your answer below and share one system that’s changed your business the most 👇

When I started moving like this is when my life changed for the better. I felt free. I was able to understand what I needed to get done and also unlock free time because instead of doing what came to mind I had a plan to execute. The hardest part for me to this day is dialing in my systems and being disciplined. Some times I’m not perfect I miss a time frame or I procrastinate. It throws me off but I try to use my systems to bring me back.

Controversial Topic: Booth Rent vs. Commission Which Model Actually Builds Better Barbers?
This debate has been going on for YEARS in the industry, and everybody has an opinion… but I want to hear YOURS. Barbers: - Do you feel like booth rent gives you more freedom…or does it make you lazy with no real structure? - Do you feel like commission shops take too much of your money…or does the mentorship, walk-ins, systems, and accountability justify it? - Which model helped you grow FASTER in your career and why? Shop Owners: - Are barbers more committed and dependable on commission,or do they perform better when they’re paying booth rent out of their own pocket? - Which model gives you a stronger culture and long-term retention? - If you could start over today, which model would you choose and why? 🔥 Follow-Up: The Real Question Nobody Wants to Answer… Are barbers choosing booth rent because they want freedom or because they want to avoid accountability, systems, and business growth? And… Are shop owners choosing commission because it benefits the barbers or because it keeps them “locked in” and makes the owner more money? Let’s be HONEST with this one. Drop your REAL thoughts, your experiences, your wins, your frustrations. This discussion is meant to open eyes, challenge mindsets, and help every barber understand what structure ACTUALLY builds a successful long-term career. Comment below — Booth Rent or Commission? Which one is TRULY better for the future of our industry?

I run a commission Barbershop. When we started we tried booth rent and our group of barbers where highly successful we helped coach and teach them to build there books and make a true living. The down side was the business was melting and not growing. The cost of Staying in business goes up each year by a minimum of %3 and the business wasnt making any more income for what it provided. the other issue is you cant achieve big things and impact with just 1 person. We switched to Commission and Grew from 1 location to 4 locations and have helped our barbers grow from brand new no clientele to making over 100k a year. I do see the appeal in booth rent for barbers who are driven but at the same point you could make even more money with a bigger marketing budget and a team that helps each other grow and gives back to the community that feeds you. We do at least 10 community service events a year that where impossible with booth rent barbers because they are more worried about them selves then with the community around them. A shop owner is supposed to run the shop and help the barbers not cut hair. They can cut hair if they have time management skills but in reality their job is to make the business run not cut belong side you and steal your cuts. You do need to take pride in yourself but also take pride in the community of people who support you and the business. If you are on booth rent i would make sure you dont only think of your booth as your responsibility but the shop is just like your community you live in or your condo or town home. if somethings wrong at your home you probably are not just going to look the other way.

Barbers today’s challenge is simple: show your work.
🎥 Post a short video of you in your zone cutting, detailing, styling whatever part of the craft makes you feel alive. Don’t overthink it. Just capture that real energy of what you do every day. Whether you’re working a fade, line-up, or beard detail, tag the products or tools you’re using (the clippers, trimmers, or products that help you bring your vision to life). I’m using my favorite (White JRLs) Show the world not just the cut but the passion behind it. Because at the end of the day, the consistency, creativity, and craftsmanship you put into every haircut is what separates you from the rest. Let’s inspire the next wave of barbers coming up behind us. Drop your video in the comments I’ll be sharing a few favorites this week 👇

I was teaching a class in St George Utah using my andis Supra detachable and Hanzo shears for @savantgrooming products and what I realized the most is when we teach others is when we learn the most. We have to think about what we are used to doing naturally and explain it to another person in words to make it make sense. I challenge you to help the new person in your shop this week and see what you actually learn from yourself 🫶🏻
