What is worth more, changing direction and accept a lower salary but keeping up to date with the latest technology or stay in the same position with high salary but being stuck with the same technology and possibly not keeping up with the times.
I recently had to change my job, I was basically told it would be better to leave the current job. Although it came as a surprise, I accepted the challenge and started looking for a new job. I had many interviews, some wired, some wished they never happened, but I finally managed to get a job in one month and a half that I find really challenging and exciting. With this, I also changed directions, and chose a different path. Even if the salary is not similar with what I get right now, I find the new job more exciting and I am eager to start working and do new stuff. So the question is, is it worth it to keep doing the same things for years for fear of not getting the same salary or is it better to change things, to stay relevant and learn new things but maybe having to accept a lower salary at the beginning, but, at the same time, increasing both your chances of being hired and salary on long term?

@Dragos Nedelcu you are right. It turns out this job is actually quite okay. It’s remote, working with a UK team from Romania (Brasov), I get to work with technologies that are valued on the job market (Databricks and pyspark and basically they pay me to learn) the culture of the company is good, they truly promote life/work balance. I was forced to change the job, so basically I did not get to choose between multiple offers, but I feel I landed in right the place. 🙂 The salary is very close to what I got from the previous employer, but I feel the management and the company in general is a lot better compared to the previous one. I am on the winning side. Sometimes we can not have have full control over the things that happen in our lives, so we have trust our heart. I know we tend to value the place we work more based on how much we earn, and of course I also want to get a fair salary, but having a better salary in a toxic work place is not a good balance. It’s hard to find that balance, but for now I think I am in the right place.

Technical Assessment - not what I expected
So I just took the Technical Assessment and the results are a revelation! Turns out my weaknesses are not what I thought they were: 1. "Architecture" - I thought I had a great handle on system design, turns out I don't know what I'm talking about so well! 2. "Software Lifecycle" - I believed I was totally comfortable with this domain, turns out it's a big blind spot 3. "Thinking Fullstack" - I'm very into the whole "full stack"/ "delivering end-to-end" idea, but looks like I have some work to do And my strengths: 1. "UI" - it's not my strongest interest, but I guess I put in the hours over the years? 2. "Algorithms" - total surprise! Never believed I knew my way around algos and data structures The only thing that makes sense here is I've always been passionate about Code Quality - phew! So if you haven't taken the Assessment, I highly recommend it - you might get a surprise too! BTW, anyone got any tips on how to get better at those first three?

Make and Makefiles
I recently learned about Make and I'm wondering if people use it actively as part of their daily tools despite the availability of modern build tools and if yes, why that over these newer tools. Is there an advantage to using Make?

Makefiles are really useful with docker as you can pass multiple commands and don’t have to remember each command. Also Makefile helps creating a shortcut for your docker command.
