Kick vs Sub Bass volumes/ratio (Foundation)
Hello, Is there a common ratio/volume balance for Kick + Sub bass in EDM/EBM/Rock genre? So let's say, if my kick is hitting at -6dbs, should the sub bass (not the main bass layer) be hitting at that same level, louder, or lower? So far I have been putting up the sub bass volume by ear, but find it hard to know when it is right. Everything sounds good to me :-)

Need help with the Foundation First method
Currently I am working on the Final Mix assignment on MP101. I am trying the "Foundation"- method. I watched the instruction video several times and I get my Snare to -5 Db TP en the VU-meter around 0. Then I set the Kick to peak -5 Db TP. As soon as I combine them, my peak occasionally jumps to -2.2 Db TP when there's a fill on the snare (end of the chorus). I cannot seem to get them together at -5 TP. Or should I just focus an that fill? Can this be because of a build-up of frequencies? I tried EQ-ing things, that does not seem to get the job done. Any recommendations/tips? Or should I just wait the the Foundation-method and finish MP101 first? Thanks in advance!

@Phillip Winters yeah some more indepth info would be great because even with kick and snare samples which are the same sound each time I have a hard time getting the results in metering

Mix trick or trash?
We’re going to film a video called β€œmix trick or trash?” for YouTube. Well read out a common mixing tip, then each vote if it’s a great trick, or total trash. What are the most controversial mixing tips and tricks you can think of that we could cover?

What style of music do you create?
What's going on y'all? I am curious to see what types of musical creatives we have in this space! I myself personally create in a few different styles myself... Anywhere from more of a singer songwriter type of vibe, to a rap/ hip hop style, and occasionally get a little more aggressive with some rock and metal type tracks as well. Currently in the process of learning to play the guitar and drums as well as learning how to create beats, record and process my vocals, mix, aaaand master... ya know... the whole sha-bang! πŸ˜…πŸ€£ Trying to be a one stop shop without having a need to outsource anything in my creative process. I have a toooon of ideas in my head just need to learn the proper skills to be able to translate... So here I am and I have never been more excited about learning in my life! LFG Gang!🀘 We can all make it if we stay consistent with it πŸ’ͺ

Personally I make experimental electronic music in the vein of Visible Cloaks, Jan Jelinek. With a new project/duo we are doing heavy EBM/industrial going back to my metal roots πŸ€“
Mixing with headphones
I end up creating a quick mix of tracks for my students and often with headphones, but when I listen back in the car, it's just not the best. (sigh). Please give me any advice possible from the type of headphones I should use to any tricks with the volume balance. I have 3 different headphones, Sony MDR-7506, DT770pro80d7 and HD280Pro.

I recently switched headphones from AKG k712 i was using for years. Together with learning here at this community, and a different headphones that better matches my music genre I am having far less problems. Before I kept overcompensating for what the AKG was under-presenting. No headphone is perfect but with some research and deliberate choices you can defin. get better more repeatable results. I know I have.
