Do long legs equal long strides?
How many struggle with over striding? Being six feet two inches tall a misconception I had was long legs meant long β€œstretch um out” strides. Height can allow a longer stride, but trying to force stride length by reaching often increases braking forces and can overload the hamstrings, calves, feet, and ankles. Boy did I ever learn the hard way. I took November till February off to recover from hamstring issues. I’ve started focusing on propulsion with foot strikes under center mass. Shorter strides and quicker turnover is not natural for me, but I am working on it. I struggle once fatigue sets in to my old ways of reaching. I know it ironic to want quick or instant results without put effort in to making the change. You might think I picked the wrong hobby πŸ˜‚. I know it will take time and persistence, so here is my plan β€œSLED” or Suck Less Each Day. What tips, drills or advice do ya’ll have to help make this transition?

Hey Alan!! So common. learning it the hard way through a hamstring injury is unfortunately how most tall runners figure this out. Leg length, height, and mass are actually not primary factors in determining optimal stride rate and length. The research is pretty clear on this. What matters is where your foot lands relative to your centre of mass. --> Foot strike under the hips = forward propulsion --> Foot strike out in front = a braking moment that goes up and backward through the body (that's your hamstring stress right there) Drills that can help: - Uphill running: even a gentle 2-5% grade naturally forces foot strike under the body and a forward lean from the ankles!! This is my favourite because it's the most natural way to do it - Short stride strides: 20-30 second accelerations focusing entirely on turnover, not reach. If you want to know how to do strides, check my youtube video on this Also one important final note: when your hear 'shorten your stride', that only applies to the part of the stride in front of your body. Your posterior stride (the push-off behind you) should actually be as long as possible. Most runners underuse the back end of the stride (far more than they overstride at the front). So focus on the push-back, not just the landing.
