My starter’s name is Yeast Of Eden. He’s 2 months old today. I recently made a new starter that was started on January 13, 2026. His name is Manna. I created both from scratch. I took a look at Manna earlier today and I saw some black specks and I’m wondering is it mold…. If so, how did that happen. He hasn’t been in the fridge. He lives on the counter or in a proofing box on really cold days.

@Sandra Brenes ok. Thank you. I took 2g of starter from a section not close to it and fed it as usual. So, we shall see. I do use dry erase markers to mark my jar so it’s possible that that’s what it is. Whenever I wipe the dry erase off it kind of flakes apart so it’s possible that that found its way in my container. There were no black spots anywhere else. I appreciate your response to me.

Hi I'm Candi. I love cooking and especially baking. Baking is truly my therapy. It's my quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of real life. I recently began my sourdough journey by creating my first starter on December 3, 2025. Before I actually started I took interest in reading about it and other people's journey and experiences. I'm glad to be a part of this community and I look forward to expanding my knowledge and exploring all types of preferments. Happy baking everyone!!

Whole wheat sourdough
Tried a whole wheat sourdough bread today, it turned out awesome! I used 1/2 all purpose & 1/2 wholewheat flour. We had to control ourselves otherwise we would have eaten it all.
