The love of watches has become a Family hobby (affliction 😜). My younger son saved his money and was able to buy a Breitling Super Ocean on the secondary market for his first (purchased by him) watch. He wore it every day for years, then he had started to pursue and own other watches. He came to me a couple of weeks ago saying he was going to sell the Breitling as he was wanting to take the money and put it somewhere else more useful in his life as a new homeowner. While I am so proud that he is willing to sacrifice something he already owned in an effort to speed upside other part of his life like his home, I also knew that he would probably regret it later. He went to the retailer that sold it to him and got an approximate value for it. He would be selling it at a loss. He went online to Chronos24 as an example to fact check the price range. He came over to the house one day and asked me what I thought. We talked it over and I supported his decision to sell it. What I did though was buy it from him for my own collection at the price they offered him. I have always liked this watch of his, I had not owned a Breitling in my collection. I also thought this would be a great watch to connect my son and I. I am wearing it today as he is coming home to visit for the Holiday weekend and I am feeling nostalgic. One day, I hope to leave or give this watch back to him so that he can continue to enjoy it and remember why he started in this hobby. If he ever wants to buy it back from me before I am ready to give it to him I will support that as well. Now I currently am the custodian of a watch that was once my son's and this has special meaning to me. One day it will be his again or if I am fortunate enough to be gifted a grandson by him, I may just give it to him! These are the stories that watches tell for me. While money is important the story and the heritage behind these time pieces and "How I interact with Time" is the most important part of the collecting and caring for these wonderful pieces.
