Weekly Timepiece News — August 29, 2026 This was a much stronger week than you normally expect at the end of August. The big story is that manufacturers are beginning to show their hands before Geneva Watch Days 2026, which begins September 2 with 68 participating watchmakers. Expect next week’s report to be considerably bigger, especially for independents. 🥇 Release of the Week — MING 57.05 “Comet” MING produced the watch that interests me most this week. The new 57.05 Comet Worldtimer isn’t simply another colorway: it introduces a clever patent-pending solution to one of the annoyances of world-time watches. Cities observing daylight-saving time sit on a separately adjustable outer bezel. Rotate it one click and those cities advance an hour while non-DST cities remain where they are. That’s a genuinely useful bit of independent-watchmaking innovation rather than complication for complication’s sake. The steel case is 40 mm × 10.3 mm, water resistance is 100 m, and the automatic MING 330.M2 provides 50 hours of reserve. Only 200 pieces will be produced at CHF 6,950 on leather or CHF 7,950 on Polymesh; ordering opened August 27. My take: this is exactly the type of independent watch worth following: recognizable design, genuine technical thinking and a price that hasn’t drifted into six figures. 🥈 Omega finally fixes the Speedmaster 38’s looks Omega completely refreshed the Speedmaster 38 on August 25 with seven references. Most importantly, the awkward oval subdials are gone. The new watches borrow much more heavily from the Moonwatch: conventional round registers, a wider traditional tachymeter bezel, dot-over-90 detailing, less dial text and a Moonwatch-style bracelet with micro-adjustment. The standout is the black-dial/no-date steel model. It almost feels like a modern spiritual successor to the old Speedmaster Reduced. There’s one disappointment: Omega didn’t really solve the thickness issue collectors have complained about. So this is primarily an aesthetic correction rather than an engineering overhaul. Still, it’s a substantially better-looking Speedmaster 38.
