Lock Left Question
Offence has ball at the top, player at the wing, Strong side corner, and high post. (5th offensive player on weakside wing but irrelevant for my question) Scenario: The ball moves quickly from point to wing to corner. Question: do we close from the Nail? If yes, who takes Nail coverage? If Wall, who takes the Wall coverage? If it’s Nail drops to Wall, who is the new Nail? Do we want to overload the court defensively on the strong side?
Reset Drills
Just wanted to get some ideas for reset drills when practice takes a dip in energy and enthusiasm. Thanks in advance!

We do four things based on age and time of season. 1. High Five drill - two groups face each other and go down the line high fiveing, cheering hollering. really emphasize bringing energy 2. practice our time outs - call time out in practice, huddle up and address the dip. ask why questions and ask players to recommend solutions. If you want to develop leadership, leave the huddle in the hands of your PG/leader. If it doesn't improve, you take a TO and then talk with your leader post-practice about their approach and thoughts. 3. one of our favourite drills is 11 man-5 ball drill. its high tempo lots of shots and the team competes against the clock for score 4. Oregon hustle drill - its set up for a player to close out, box out, take a charge, save a ball going out of bounds, grab a loose ball off the floor, then sprint to receive a pass for a ball. Our players on the sideline really bring the energy watching teammates get after it. If the energy is low as you say, i rig the drill that our best hustle players go first.
Curriculum Help Needed
Alright fellow Savians, I have need of your thoughts and assistance. I have been named Technical Director of a club that feeds into my HS program. My responsibilities are player AND coach development. The club has high potential and modest achievements at the moment. We want to more to a more European model, one in which all teams and programs act in a more Coordinated manner. I have been tasked with developing curriculums for our U11, U13 and U15 programs. We have 45 hours of instruction (90m slots) and about 12-15 1h games. I’m looking for ideas, concepts & plans I can use to implement an almost plug&play package for incoming coaches. Some of our basic philosophies are: 1. Offence before defence 2. Play at speed 3. Play at a run vs Run plays 4. Technical development over winning 5. Decision making over mindless repetition At U11, which is what I’m struggling with right now, our KPIs will be speed dribble with both hands, pass to a moving target, catch on the run, be able to start stop on balance, power lay-ups. I’d love to hear thoughts and ideas for both player instruction and coaching development.

@Jared Sanford we’ve gone to 4v4 at U11.
Advice needed
The high school girls program at my school is a low point. 2 years ago the coach retired, and his assistant became the new varsity coach. The 2 years following have been filled with tons of drama between the coaches, parents, and players. The team has regressed over the years and lost to teams they hadnt lost to in a LONG LONG time. The worst part is that it is killing the program, there are fewer and fewer girls turning out each year, and the ones that play do not seem to be enjoying the experience. The season recently ended, and following that the JV coach resigned, due in large part to the way her and the HC got along. I think there is still a small chance the HC isn't brought back either for next year. Anyways, I really want to step in and bring the SAVI way to the program. I've been diligently studying LL/R&S along with trying to fill up my drill book and learning how to created a competitive cauldron. The thing is, I don't know whether to put in for the JV job, hope that the HC understands the situation of the program and would be willing to do a extreme makeover to the program. Or do I wait 1 more year and hope that it is the final year of their tenure and step in. I worry that if step in now, and I cant convince her to buy in to the programs of LL and R&S, along with the other SAVI Ideals, that it will reflect poorly on me as a coach. But it also pains me to watch the program become what it has over the past few years. I also have a group of girls that will be coming through the program that I have invested a lot of time in. I do not want to see them get to the program in the current condition. I'm kind of at a crossroads and would like to hear any advice from the SAVI community. Thanks in advance!

I have just gone back to JV coach, after being much farther up the coaching ladder. Culture first wins over your admin, athletic department, parents, players and importantly future players. Is this a fun exciting place to play where I’ll improve? Okay I’m in! We’re seeing the dividends already

@Peter Stuart have a parents (& players) meeting after you’ve had one or two practices. Express your expectations for players and parents. How they can help, how they can hinder etc. lay out your philosophies, intro Duce yourself and your staff, have kids intro their parents. If somebody is particularly boisterous in a negative way, ask them to keep stats. Alan Stein has a “letter to parents” somewhere on the internet that we’ve found useful in the past. If your league has a “parents code of conduct” use that. If not, make one. If you don’t want to make one, I’ll share the one we use. Good luck

@Peter Smith find an assistant/co-coach who is philosophically aligned and have them take over after the season. Work collectively to determine your off-season course of action. Let your aide coach and if you want to be in the gym, you enhance and build relationships. Put coaching second and build camaraderie. Become the “good time guy” in the off season. You get a rest, your players get a rest from you AND you build capacity in your program.
