Coach-Player dynamic (High School)
Hi Savi team. I've recently gotten into debated regarding Coach & Player dynamics in today's world (As we know, today's generation of kids are different with social media and how they interact with authority. With the context that everyone's situation is different. Here are my questions. 1) What are your thoughts on Coaches playing online video games with their players- Assistants specifically. 2) What are your thoughts on Coaches taking a select few players to outings- Grabbing lunch, going to the mall, going to other games together, etc. Not as a team- only with "their guys" 3) If you were a Head Coach, and your staff was participating in things like this, how would you approach it? Part of the debate is that Coach-Player relationship can sometimes be stronger with this dynamic as it builds trust and rapport, while another side of the debate was that it blurs lines and that accountability becomes harder to enforce.

1) I think its an all or none type of thing. If you are okay with one coach is building these relationships with some of the players, the other coaches should be doing something as well so that none of the players are left out. This way there is no exclusivity aspect. If the staff isnt willing to use some of their free time doing this, then I dont think any coach should be. Too much potential for divisiveness within the team. 2) Again all or nothing. 3) I would get all the coaches together and decide what we are comfortable with doing. If the rest of your staff is willing to put in this effort with the rest of the team, split up evenly, then maybe this could work. If not I would probably explain to the assistant why these actions could be bad for the team. I understand the importance in building relationships, but to me the cons outweigh the pros in this scenario.
Analytics
Coaches — I’d love to hear how you all handle this with your players, parents, and overall program philosophy. I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea that “analytics-based basketball” isn’t just about shooting more 3s or playing fast, but about maximizing expected value (shot quality, first-best shot, etc.). The tradeoff, as I understand it, is that while this approach can increase your chances of winning over time, it also increases variance — meaning you may have more blowout losses along the way. For example: instead of consistently losing close games, you might win more overall, but when you lose, it can get lopsided. My questions: - How do you communicate this idea to players and parents who naturally judge success by score margins and “keeping games close”? - Do you fully embrace the variance that comes with this style? - At the youth/high school level, how do you balance “playing the right way” analytically vs. managing confidence? - Have you found ways to help players stay bought in during those tougher, one-sided loses?

The message should be consistent throughout in my opinion. Process>Results. Control what you can control. I also think that some of the things you are bringing up actually reduce variance. The more possessions you have the less variance there will be. If the other team is truly better than you more possessions will also give you a smaller chance to win. Thats a big reason you see so much stalling in states that dont have a shot clock. Also as Claire said the V in SAVI, Victory, is yours to define. Depending on the age they can and should look very differently. If you are coaching anything below High School Varsity, I think that development should trump winning. That said losing is hard on confidence/fun. Figure out what your KPI's are. You initially said that you are wanting to improve the efficiency on offense. I would say you can use your Points Per Possession. On defense you can use something similar. This should help with the scoreboard fixation. Last thing I would remind everyone constantly, most of the time growth is not linear. Trust the process you have created and stay consistent.

I'm pretty balanced out.
1-3-1 LockLeft Blue
Coming out of last weeks Newsletter, I have gotten over 100 requests for the primer on the LL Blue Zone. So I made this video, and put it in the LockLeft Mini Course here. The intent of Blue is a change up to your base defense, though it can be your base as well! I just believe it's ideal to have a change up to whatever your base D is. As always, this and all our most updated videos are available to our SAVI Basketball members. Come check it out FREE for 7 Days.

I loved using blue last year with Middle school girls. The wall simplicity makes things some much easier for them initially.
Thank you Savi!
We had our most successful year in school history this year! Made it all the way to the state championship game where we fell to a team with 6'8 and 6'10 brothers. Waiting on Savi to release the next course on how to stop that with a team of small guys! Thankful for all the knowledge shared on here, definitely wouldn't have had the season we did without Savi!

You did amazing this year Jake! I want to say thank you, because you have been one of the most influential people for me so far in my SAVI Journey. I remember basically SAVI stalking everyone in this group, trying to find their games online and seeing how well they do what I believe SAVI is trying to work towards. Watching your team it was apparent from the first tip of the first game I watched that was what I wanted for my kids. I reached out to you and you were so gracious with your time and knowledge I cant thank you enough. I know your kids and community feel the same way. You gave them a season to remember after losing some great talent last year. Also yes, I would also like to know how to stop those players :D.
