Volume Balance / Clip Gain Automation???
Hey friends, just a quick question, should I start (after organizing tracks etc.) with clip gain automation or volume balance for the static mix? I want to get my static mix sounding good, but some parts are lower than others. Now I know how important it is to get a consistent recording. 🤣

@Garry Simmons I agree with Garry. I've done the normalization method too and it works fine. But the last two mixes I've implemented the Kevin McCloskey method, I must say I like the results for the kick, bass & snare. It takes me a bit longer to do it that way. Still do volume automation for certain sections. And use clip gain for inconsistencies, specially if it's affecting the peak level or headroom I'm aiming for. Probably good to try a few different ways and determine which method you like best.
Producer 101- Notes Comparison Discussion?
I know some of you have already done this. I know some are on it right now. I am curious as to how/what you guys did or got to and such. I mean there is no one but ourselves checking out our work, unless we do a mentor call right? Well, we can check each others work out and then we can leave the more important things or whatever it may be for mentor calls. Though these are basics and probably as important as anything else, however trivial it may seem. Reference track analyses/eqing, do you guys build your profile with whole song, then eq by comparing the profiles? Or just parts of it here and there? Limiting to RMS -9, Did you do this over the entirety of the song, or by analyzing parts of the song? how did you go about achieving it? Some analyzers are momentary, and some build upon the value. Were you happy with the results after compression/saturation/EQ etc and then Limiting to -9RMS? Did you feel the changes were sufficient to the song mixes, or do you feel that they're just showing us some processes to ensure we understand what the tools do, to move forward? Something to get us all interacting I hope. \m/ I wasn't quite happy with the results I got, so I didn't bother saving the files even. But if you guys would like to check it or compare, I'll just redo a bit later when/if I get that chance. I redid it, not quite sure if it suffices. I struggled more this time, probably because I am not feeling too well and using different tools this time around. Personally... I don't even know what to think about it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15SGlSUEk46TsGoM32lsLV50Zr-dJP-ef/view?usp=sharing

This one is your master compared to the Anti-Hero reference, so your low end is actually matching that pretty close. I think the important thing is that you understand how you can get your track close to the reference with EQ. And you've done that. And if you like what you are hearing even if it's not exact to the reference, that's what matters.

@Jasper Labuschagne yeah, I think the curriculum really builds the mentality of which tool to reach for depending on what you are trying to achieve. And it is very helpful to establish a consistent workflow. But then you'll tweak some stuff to adjust to how you like doing things. Like using LUFS instead of RMS. You are doing amazing!
ADHD et al
@Caleb Loveless Thank you so much for including all the info in the Vocal Intensive "learning to learn" video. I've been struggling with so many of those issues from ADHD to memory retention, especially watching all the video tutorials within our community. How frustrating it is to watch the 10 hour EQ or Compression lessons for example, then try to apply everything that was explained as I begin the mixing process, only to scratch my head asking myself, "what was I supposed to do first?" Though I have used some of the suggestions in the past, I now feel like I have a better path to help with my issues....now if we only had 26 hour days to go back and implement them all with the past replays that I've already forgotten to remember.

@Alexey Gripas this is real, I felt very similar. I'm 33 as well and was diagnosed this year. I had never considered ADHD because I'm not a hyperactive person, at least not externally. But I was not aware of the innattentive type. This goes under the radar for so many people. I think there should be more awareness. You are not broken and you are not lazy. In fact you probably work extra hard. But we got this! It can be a superpower too.

@Alexey Gripas lol right. It does take work and some help from tools like the ones suggested on the lesson mentioned. Calendars, task managers, timers, schedules... But being aware and accomodating for how your brain works brings some freedom. Best of luck in the journey, feel free to reach out if you need. 👍
Struggling (all my life, it seems) with de-essing
Hey all, one thing I've noticed is that esses sound different (and worse/lispier) when the volume is low. Anyone else have this same perception, and why is that? What are your go-to de-essers? I've tried BSA's DSR, XVox Pro's De-esser (in the vocal chain), Izotope RX-11 De-ess, and iZotope Nectar 4 DeEsser with really no luck.

This has been a struggle for me too. It's been better lately since I learned clip gain automation, very useful. And don't forget to adjust sibilance on backing vocals, either treat or chop it. And then also being cautious with bright reverbs, EQ or de ess.
