Using AI in Training Materials
I recently read an article that showed that learning can be hampered by the use of AI videos in training materials. Here are some findings from the research: 1. The use of high-quality AI produced nearly identical results when compared to human voiceover. However, learners showed significantly worse results and engagement when low-quality (robotic, choppy, flat, etc) AI voiceovers were used. 2. Full screen AI avatars were viewed as distracting, however, picture-in-picture AI avatars actually enhanced training. The reasoning was that full screen avatars made subtle differences such as eye movement, lip syncing, and breathing patterns more obvious and therefore, more distracting. 3. To the surprise of no one, they found that AI performed worse with topics associated with soft skills such as communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence, etc... They recommend human voiceovers for these types of topics due to the emotional nuances tied to them. What are your thoughts on that? Do you use AI voiceovers/avatars in your training material?

Apologies in advance for this super long post. 🙈 Just recently, I improved my workflow for creating learning videos. It used to be a drag. As is most likely the case with you all, I know the content in and out, but there are just so many steps from the idea to the video. Writing the script, settung up the camera and phone, putting too much thought into design when really I am interested in the content, etc. This mountain of - to me - not super interesting steps kept preventing me from creating videos and progressing. So here´s what I changed: 1. I remembered the saying: "Do you need it perfect, or by Tuesday?" I am creating learning videos for an interested audience, after all, not a trailer for a Hollywood movie. 2. I discovered that quite recently Claude was integrated into PPT: Open PPT, click on "Add-Ins" in the top right corner, connect, and go! Then instruct it with the contents and some design preferences. Watch it work, and review the slides afterwards. It´s pretty impressive. 🙂 3. Then I started to optimize my workflow: a) First the preparation: -- I created a "Room" in Perplexity (paid version, but any LLM will do), uploaded my full script for the entire course, and added instructions. -- then I wrote precise instructions for Claude in PPT what it should do with my content and what design I prefer, and saved this as a txt-file b) then the workflow: -- now everytime I want to create a video, I open a new chat within that Perplexity Room and post that part of my script that I want to turn into a learning video -- The instructions I added to the Room kick in and I receive a PPT text for my content, strongly based on my script. Some back and forth, and reviewing the output by myself (always! 🙂) -- post the text as a file into Claude in PPT, copy-paste the prepared instructions, and watch the magic happen 🧙 -- Then I thoroughly work over the PPT presentation (content-wise, the design is usually fine with some very minor adjustments) -- Once the PPT is finished, I post this PPT-file into the previous Perplexity chat I got the PPT text from, and ask it to give me the notes for each slide, adding which tone I am aiming for

@Billy Daniel My take is that between ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity it doesn't make much sense to look too closely. There are differences, but it all evens out over a couple of months. So if you like a tool, go for it. Perplexity is different in that it is no LLM by itself, but connects to a variety of LLMs depending on your prompt. I use Perplexity mainly when I want to add research, because I like how thorough it is and how retracable its output is. But as stated above, all the big LLMs are pretty good by now. Sometimes they have offers, so perhaps look for those. But the combining theme is that the free version is always much weaker than the paid version, and that if you work with AI, definitely get the paid version of any LLM.
