Coffee with Coaches Summary - Nick S.
General Intro: My name is Nick Sommers. I've been a competitive swimmer for 13 years and an endurance triathlete for 4. I joined the locos in 2023 and have loved the group ever since. I met Josh at tri-indy in 2022 which prompted my entry to the team. I've completed 4 Fulls, 7 Half's and various other sprint and oly tri's in the midwest. I'm based out of Avon and Crawfordsville (for college) and currently swim for Wabash Swimming and Diving. My upcoming races for 2026 are Ironman Canada, 70.3 Happy Valley, and I'm Guiding a para-athlete for the 70.3 Muncie swim. Me as a Coach: As a swimmer, I've also been a technique coach for my local team and have trained a few athletes to complete a 70.3 swim comfortably. My focus is on technique. Technique is obviously the building block for speed which is why I like to spend my sessions with clients in person. I offer sessions starting at $45/hr and will travel to you to administer said sessions. I know that some people are not in the Indianapolis area which makes in person training tough but I can also extend my services through direct message. I want to work with your commitments and give the best advice possible to help you become comfortable swimming and racing. Please check out the coaches page in the classroom for more information and my contact points. Swim Training and Equipment: Equipment and training are two things that budding swimmers often struggle with. I've tried many different products and have a few recommendations. Goggles: Arena Cobra Swipe or the Speedo Speed Socket are two great options for goggles. Those two are at very different price points but are great options for durability, visibility, and fit. Fins: I recommend the Arena Pro 2 short fins for building leg strength, recovery, and comfort. They Kickboard: any, just get one, can be super simple. Also great for recovery day. pull buoy: any, just get one, can be super simple. Pull buoys are super great for building upper body strength and growing comfort after we tweak technical pieces of your stroke

Lots of fun. I’ll be creating a summary here soon as well
Sponsor Support
Hi Team, Much of the feedback over the years has included requests for more sponsor support! As you can tell, I have been aggressively pursuing companies to jump in and help us build this community. This sport is EXPENSIVE and if there is anything I can do to help, I will! That said, aside from local event registrations, what sponsors and products would you like to see most? How could these sponsors help the most? The benefit of a large community is strength in numbers. We're at a good spot where I can boast about reaching 80+ members directly, but the more the better! My ask is that you encourage your endurance friends to join in on the fun. If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with friends!

Precision hydration. Great products, solid taste, and very customizable. I personally just made the switch and really enjoy it Also being an Indianapolis/ Louisville based team. Zipp is right in our backyard. Wheels are so damn expensive that even a 10% discount is productive.
Ironman 70.3 Rockford
Hey Everybody!! My name is Isaac Baxter, and I just joined this group after Olivia Rogers told me about it! I moved down to Charlotte, NC back in April, and recently started training for the IM 70.3 in Rockford next June. I’ve got a pretty solid base on cycling and running, and just got back in the pool in the last few weeks. Any tips or tricks for approaching training for this event, or has anybody done this specific IM course? Any help/support is appreciated! Looking forward to learning from all of you and getting better each day!

I was out there this summer and it was great other than hotel locations. There are ones that super nice right next to the village but other than that the rest were about a 15-20 minute drive away. race wise the bike course was awesome. going back to transition was tough though, because of the rolling hills, wind speed, and direction that others talked about. Run-wise though, HOT. it was such a hot day but the spectators were great in having cold towels, ice, water, electrolytes etc. Personally i'd rather do louisville or sandusky over rockford but its still a great race other than the heat and wind. I do hope they change the run course a tad though, it felt like they kinda just slopped together 13.1 miles and said "yea this'll work". still dropped a 4:45 so not a slow course by any means.
Gauging interest
Hey Loco's, for those that haven't met me yet, I'm Nick Sommers. I'm a college swimmer and have been a triathlete for 4 years now (apart of the team for 2yrs), completing 4 fulls and 7 halfs. I know swimming can be extremely hard for folks and want to help out the team. Therefore, I want to offer swim "lessons" or guidance, especially for technique. I've been teaching adults for some time now and also work with children. Ideally, during my college season we would meet on Sundays to work together. LMK if this is something we'd want
