That is because fear lives in the nervous system, not in rational thought. Why Is Saying No So Hard
Saying yes when you want to say no is not a boundaries issue. It is a nervous system pattern learned around safety, attachment, and threat. At some point, your system learned that keeping others calm, pleased, or close mattered more than your own signal to stop. That pattern does not live in your mindset. It lives in the body. This is why insight, affirmations, or better communication strategies only take you so far. EMDR works where this pattern actually lives. Not at the surface, but at the root. We do not manage this response. We help the nervous system update it. And when that happens, saying no stops feeling dangerous. It starts feeling neutral, sometimes even relieving.
