I will be a few minutes late today, so sorry!
Let's talk about the thing that everyone's talking about
As you may have noticed, the freediving community is divided at the moment about a video posted by Vitomir Maricic. You can see the video and post here: (*warning graphic content*) https://www.instagram.com/p/DOye-V1iF-N/ To put it simply: One side believes the video gives the sport of freediving a bad image and normalizes squeezes, blackouts, DSC, accidents and dangerous practices. If you read through some of the comments, many people state that it is reckless behavior, that's it's dangerous to dive with this mindset, it's disrespectful & dangerous for everyone around them, and it teaches a bad example to freediving students William Trubridge wrote an article about this and some of the backstory here: https://www.williamtrubridge.com/post/freediving-is-under-pressure The other side believes the video shows the dangers of freediving, the risks and injuries involved like any other extreme sport. On Vitomir's subsequent post, he posted a gallery of athletes having injuries with a long post, here's an excerpt: "Think about skiing accidents, climbing falls, surfing with sharks, cardiac incidents in football, not to mention combat sport, mtb, gymnastics, skating, motor sports. None of these tragedies has stopped those sports growing. Freediving is no different." Certainly both sides have a point. What do you think? Let's talk about it!!

I have soo many thoughts about this. Being so new to the sport my mind is certainly not made up and much of what I take to be true is merely hearsay, but I find myself quite skeptical of Trubridge. I've met Vito and Petar, and I also think that a major part of their point is that the dangers of squeezing and blacking out should be met openly. Having penalties associated with squeezing encourages athletes to hide their symptoms when they might need help the most. In training with them they do not seem recklessโ€”they are wildly thoughtful and intentional with their approach. Their conclusions become separated from their methodical and empirical arguments. I get the sense that Trubridge has a major personal problem with the two, which unfortunately colors what should be a sensible discussion about science, safety, and the sport's priorities. I don't think he took well to Petar breaking his CNF recordโ€”though if he really thought they were cheaters I could see why he would be upset. Who knows!!
Welcome FreedivingX LIVE-ers! Introduce yourself, so we can get to know each other :)

Hey everyone, I live in the bay area and have been diving for almost 2 years now. I got into it through scuba, but have been enjoying the intensity of the sport. I just had my first tastes of competition, and I'm excited to push on deeper! The easiest place to dive around me is a very dark, very cold lake so I am excited to have a more convenient way to train and make progress. I am hoping to gain more comfort in high CO2, and to strengthen my glottis and raise my overall facial muscular awareness to support deeper eq. I am also hoping to build better routines to make training a smaller but more regular part of my life. My current breathhold max is ~4:25, but I find I am inconsistent. Sometimes I feel very comfortable with the struggle, and sometimes I just want to bail when it gets hard. Another of my goals is to build awareness and mental tools to fight that inconsistency. Heres a pic of me snorkeling in the Ningaloo reef!
