Unpacking the box that is my story
At our last coaching call, I was reminded of the idea of how we unpack our story and how that impacts the reader's experience. I read an article a while back on this subject, and it gave the image of a box, and its contents are our story. If I simply open the box and reveal everything, the tension and mystery vanish. It’s like starting your script with an epilogue that hides nothing and leaves you with nowhere to go but to rehash what you just told us. But if I strategically take out one item at a time, I build something that could keep the reader wondering and continuing to turn the page. So as we were discussing my teaser, David brought up the image of Sauron’s mouth. This got me thinking. I shouldn’t reveal Horakon in the trailer; by that I mean, not completely. I’ll show a hand, veins, a shadow dancing, a disturbing mouth, eyes weaving out of shadows, etc. This would add even more mystery to the Vegas-style demon, so when he is revealed in act one, it makes it more impactful. I've been working on this pilot for quite a while, and it's nice to have a draft complete that feels strong, and so now I'm going through the process of making sure everything works. I'm grateful to David and you kind people for helping me improve my teaser so that it reflects the true tone of the series in an effective and succinct way.
