What Optimal Looks Like (Not Just Normal)
Laboratory reference ranges are built from population averages, including people who are metabolically compromised. A fasting insulin of 15 µIU/mL might be 'within range' in a lab that uses an upper limit of 25. In functional medicine practice, we target below 5 for optimal insulin sensitivity. Passing the threshold and actually thriving are two different things. This is the lens I bring to every lab review: where in this range is she, and what does that tell us about her trajectory? If you have ever been told your results are fine and walked out feeling dismissed, this is why. Have you been dismissed with ‘normal’ results? I’d like to hear about it. ✨

Absolutely! I can recall at least one instance from memory. I reported symptoms of joint/muscle pain and fatigue. I thought it was psoriatic arthritis. My results were normal for inflammatory markers at that point several years ago. After discussing and running labs “it could be fibromyalgia” and we could try an anti-depressant. 🤦🏻‍♀️
Has Anyone Actually Asked for These Tests?
After Tuesday's post, I want to hear from the community: have you ever asked your doctor for fasting insulin or HOMA-IR? What happened? Were they receptive? Did you get pushback? Did it lead anywhere? Your experience matters, both as validation for others in the same position and as real-world data about what we are actually up against. There is no wrong answer here. If you have never heard of these tests before this week, that is useful too. Share your experience below. This is the conversation most waiting rooms never have. ✨

Newbie here! 👋🏻 No, I’ve never asked for this test but now I think I should!
Introduction
Allow me to introduce myself! ✨ My name is Angelica✨ I am a SAHM with big dreams of getting healthy (again)! I have two boys whom I absolutely adore. I have always had trouble with my weight but noticed more significant health concerns in the last 4-5 years. I have had psoriasis, gut issues, and trouble sleeping pretty much all my life. Most recently, I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. The fatigue is REAL. Yes, I have a 10 month old son, but this felt different. I have always been a health conscious/health minded person. Some may even call me a bit “crunchy”. ✨ In the next 90 days I would like to have implemented actionable steps, and feeling WAY better than I do right now. ✨Cheers!!! 🫶🏻
