Our guest, Jason Earle of GOT MOLD?, shared how his childhood struggle with severe asthma eventually led him to discover that the musty farmhouse where he lived may have been a major part of the problem. That realization began a 25-year journey into mold, building science, indoor air quality, and environmental health. One of Jason’s core messages was simple: “You take care of the building, and it takes care of you.” We take approximately 20,000 breaths each day, yet air is often the last part of our health that we examine. Mold is one of the ways a building tells us that its ecosystem is out of balance. 👃 Never ignore a musty smell Jason explained that microbial volatile organic compounds—the chemicals responsible for musty odors—may travel through walls even when no mold is visible. A musty smell is both a warning signal and a potential health concern. 🧠 Symptoms can extend beyond allergies Possible signs discussed included headaches, brain fog, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, respiratory irritation, increased sensitivities, inflammation, and nervous-system dysregulation. One helpful clue is whether you feel better after leaving a building and worse when you return. 🐯 Don’t focus on the “hair on the tiger’s tail” Jason challenged the intense focus on individual mold species and mycotoxins. His invitation was to zoom out and examine the whole environment—including dampness, chemicals, VOCs, ventilation, dust, and the building’s history.
