Attack Vs defence
So in this world cup there have been a lot of goals. What's your thoughts on the below I heard something earlier discussing if 1. Attackers are getting better or 2. Defences are getting worse.

@Riley Reynolds Note that this World Cup has a lot more games than any World Cup before. It would be better to look at goals per game for comparison to past world cups.

The last World Cup had 2.69 goals per game. The 2026 World Cup (so far): 2.94 Note that it is usual for the knockout stages to have fewer goals, so the 2.94 is likely to drop. I don’t think the number of goals we have represents a big enough increase to be statistically significant. What that means is that this goal rate doesn’t provide evidence for an increase in the average goals per game because random chance could easily cause this increase. My conclusion: broadly strikers at this World Cup are performing similarly to past world cups, and defences are also performing similarly. Pundits don't understand statistics so frequently draw inaccurate conclusions based on too smaller sample size for statistical significance.
Great analysis tool for goalkeeper positioning
When using the BBC 3D Experience to replay World Cup goals from any angle, I noticed that when striker is about to shoot the video shows lines from the ball to the posts. Because you can move the camera to any angle including the goalkeeper view, you can really get an understanding of what the pitch should look like for you as a goalkeeper when you are in the correct position for shots from the same areas as seen in the World Cup. You could also use this to analyse good positioning for crosses, and set up for free kicks. I find the 3D Experience fairly clunky to use, but for young goalkeepers I think the learning opportunity is fantastic. I don’t think we have ever had such a good tool before for analysing good goalkeeper positioning, for those keen to improve their positioning I highly reccomend spending some time looking at goalkeeper positioning and movement using the BBC 3D Experience from multiple angles. With enough repetition your mirror synapses in your brain will help you replicate the best goalkeepers in your matches.

PICKFORD NEAR POST ?
Guys, whats your thoughts on Congo's first goal? I was watching it last night in my local - and everyone blamed Pickford stating a goalkeeper should never be beaten at near post... The ball moves so fast now, we have all been in goal when a ball is hit that fast, you only hear it hit the back of the neck - you do not see the ball!!! Whats your thoughts on this?

I had a look at the data on this because we can have opinions about what we see but the data provides facts for us to base opinions. The pre shot xG was 0.076 which means the average striker against the average goalkeeper would score this shot about 8 in 100. The post shot xG was 0.25 so Cipenga has struck a very good shot from that position that would be a goal 1 time out of 4. The shot came in from 16.49m away, the shot speed doesn’t appear to be published but assuming 80km/h shot speed Pickford had less than 0.75 seconds to react and make the save. So if the stats expect a save 3 times in 4 what happened? My opinion: I think Pickford was expecting the shot to the far post, and although his positioning looks good, because his weight was to his left he couldn’t quite cover the space at the bottom of the near post. As a goalkeeper if you are prempting a shot to one side you should also adjust your positioning to force the shot that way. Because Pickford was centrally positioned he should have been balanced ready to dive either way. If we add in complexity, Spence was covering part of the far side of the goal when he slid in, he was arriving late but at the time of the shot he had the shot to Pickford’s left at least partially covered. With this in mind, I would have liked to see Pickford take a balanced stance knowing the shot to the far post is at least partially blocked. One of the things that sets top goalkeepers apart is their ability to adjust for complexity. In this case I think Pickford will be disappointed but when a striker shoots with a shot that goes in 1 in 4 times, you aren’t going to save every one and Pickford definitely did not make any kind of error here.
PARENTS - WHAT WOULD YOU DO ?
Guys, I received a DM from a parent this week and, with their permission, wanted to share it here 👇 Their son has played for the same team for three years. Never missed games. Turned up every week. Fully committed. 💙⚽ A few weeks ago, he picked up an injury and had to miss a handful of matches 🤕 During that time, the coach put an outfield player in goal. When the young keeper returned to training, fit and ready to play, the coach told him he would only get half a game, because he now had to “fight for his place”. This really upset both the parent and the goalkeeper (who is still very young). After three years of loyalty, it felt unfair and confusing 😔 The parent spoke to the coach to explain how much this had knocked her son’s confidence — to the point where he started saying he didn’t want to play in goal anymore 💔🧤 The coach’s response?“What would you do if your head was on my shoulders?” Now, I know some grassroots coaches — especially at kids’ level — look in the mirror and see Pep Guardiola staring back at them 😅 But parents and goalkeepers…What would you do in this situation? UPDATE: Just found out that the stand in goalkeeper does not want to stay in goal - Was only playing to help out.

This situation has been handled badly by this coach. What he has said tells a lot about his attitude to the team and his players. I bet he is very much of the mindset that winning and competitiveness is more important than development. He probably thinks that by saying "earn your place" he is providing a facade of promoting development within his competitive ethos. But ultimately he has shown his true persona here, that winning for him is more important than development. He definitely should have handled this situation more carefully. My wife runs one of our daughter's teams and gametime is shared by the whole squad, regardless of missed training sessions or injuries. Players are happy and although they like to win the coaching approach has nurtured a positive attitude from the players regardless of the result. Conversations are focused on improvement rather than results. So to answer the question what would I do: If my daughter were under a coach like the competitive one described here, we would be looking to move to a dfferent more nurturing team. Goalkeepers who do extra GK training are worth their weight in gold. Any team lucky enough to have a commited GK doing extra training should be creating the right team environment for them and all their players to develop.
Helping You Save Money — Exclusive GK Community Deals!💰
I have come up with a simple way to help our community save money on the gear you want most. Each month, I will be ordering selected products and listing them on a hidden page on www.j4ksports.com — available only to our community. These products will be cheaper than anything else on the main website. Here’s how it works: You tell me which products you’d like me to source — rebounders, bags, caps, shin pads, etc Once I see what people are asking for, I will find the best deals and announce what I am about to order in advance. I will then list these items on a private J4K page at a special pre-order price. For example: if I announce goalkeeper rebounders, you might be able to pre-order them for £25/$25, instead of the usual £40/$40 retail price once they are in stock. The only catch is that these will be pre-paid offers. The reason I’m doing it this way is because in the past, I tried something similar. Lots of people were encouraging me to order certain products, and in good faith, I spent my own money to get them in stock. But once the products arrived, most of those who said they’d buy didn’t follow through — which left me with a pile of stock to sell on my own. So this way it is win-win — you save money, and this helps me to source the right stock for you and the goalkeeper community. And don’t worry — all the usual J4K guarantees apply. If you’re not happy with your product, you’ll still get your money-back guarantee, same as any other order from J4K. So - if you are interested, lets have a 'hell yes ray in comments below - and please let me know what products you would like me to get for you ' 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 Please try to name as many as you can (especially products you currently use) - This way, if i see a pattern - i will then try to source these products for you all.

Definitely the right approach. I’m hoping the reflex lights set of 4 are high on your priority list @Ray Newland . Happy to prepay for any equipment I know we will need. Raising a great GK is an expensive endeavour 🤣
