The Painted Skin Wang, a scholar, encountered a beautiful, weeping woman claiming to be a runaway concubine. Smitten, he took her home and hid her in his study. His wife, Chen, grew suspicious. But the delay allowed the priest to arrive. He subdued the monster, which shriveled into a wailing, smoky essence before being vanquished. Wang, however, was near death, his heart ripped out. A beggar, revealed to be an immortal in disguise, saved him by fitting a new, albeit oddly beating, heart into his chest. The ordeal left Wang forever haunted, a chilling reminder of the monster that wore a painted skin.
