Roald Dahl - Wednesday Motivation
One of my favourite children’s authors has always been Roald Dahl. I used to live near where he lived, and you could actually visit his house and the little writing shed at the back. They kept it exactly how it was, which is kind of surreal… even down to the chocolate wrappers sitting next to where he used to write in a a comfy armchair. Interesting fact, 11 UK publishers turned down his first book. He first found success with a US publisher who published his book 7 years before it was published in England, Anyway, here are some of his key lessons for writing children’s books: ✅ Mix kind and nasty characters. The nastier they are, the more satisfying it is when they get what’s coming. ✅ Don’t shy away from a bit of fear or mischief. Kids love being spooked, along with magic, adventure, and fun. ✅ Read your work out loud. If it doesn’t sound right, it probably isn’t. ✅ Rewrite constantly. The real magic happens in the edits. Enjoy, happy writing!
