WIIFM? What’s in it for me?
This is the key question we’re taught in ‘business-as-usual’ to answer in the first 3-5 seconds of someone encountering our brand.
This thinking, though, assumes that the person already understands the significance of what we have.
More and more, this is not the case, as our current circumstances demand new ways of thinking and doing life that do not map cleanly onto what came before.
So WIIFM is only relevant if you understand the new context we, the bridges to the future, are operating from.
If you are like most, you don’t already have that context, so it’s going to take more than 3-5 seconds to catch you up. 😅😅
Let’s explore this a little further.
Why do we feel the need to demand that our wants be centered first from strangers?
1️⃣ we are inundated. with everything. Our brains can’t keep up, so we look for shortcuts
2️⃣ we are disconnected. the quiet knowing in our bodies drowned out by the noise of the outside world. We can’t read the signals, so we demand that others make connections
3️⃣ we are sick of being misled. Much about ‘business-as-usual’ is dependent on deception and manipulation. So we demand answers to questions others will never have in an effort to feel more in control of our hijacked nervous systems.
So, I hold nothing but compassion for the parts of us (parts of me, too!) who want the quick, 5-second reason why someone or something deserves our attention.
However, I would like to offer a different way of regaining a sense of control that does NOT require anyone to jump to answer our immature demands [WIIFM]:
1️⃣ Learn to give our mind healthy tasks and fire it from taking on the role of decision-maker. Human Design is a body of work and practice that can help us do this.
2️⃣ Learn how to interpret our body’s ‘tells’, so both mind and body can collaborate for our greatest good. Parts work, like that done in the practice of Internal Family Systems, is incredibly powerful at helping us understand this in an integrated way.
3️⃣ Learn to guide all parts of yourself to truth-telling. The practice of radical self-acceptance is excellent for this.
As you read the second list, what did you notice in your body? Any ease, relief, relaxation?
So, there you have it.
To go from a ‘business-as-usual’ “WIIFM” approach to a Global Villager approach:
Free yourself from inundation by redirecting your mind from decision-making to healthier assignments, reconnect with your body’s knowing, and guide your inner systems by making it safe for truth-telling to happen.
I enjoy learning from the questions, objections or contemplations that arise from these musings. Please feel free to share yours below. 👇🏾
