If you’ve ever wondered why Spanish speakers from Spain tend to speak with a lisp... that's what we are getting into today! ¡Vamos a aprender!
So the way the letters S, C and Z are pronounced when they come into contact with vowels in different words are classified in Spanish by the following categories: Distinción, Seseo and Ceceo. Let's break this down!
1. Distinción (Standard Spanish spoken in Spain)
In most of Spain, there are 2 different sounds:
- S → /s/ (like “see”)
- Z / C (only before e, i) represented phonetically by→ /θ/ ( sounds like “th” in think)
Ex: gracias → gra-thias
zapato → tha-pato
2. Seseo (Latin America + some parts of Spain)
Everything is pronounced with an “S” sound:
Ex: gracias → gra-sias👉 zapato → sa-pato
📍 This is what you’ll hear in most of Latin America and also parts of southern Spain.
3. Ceceo (parts of Andalucía)
Everything is pronounced with a “TH” sound:
Ex: gracias → gra-thias (but ALL S sounds too)👉 casa → ca-tha
