Your body has been speaking. Thermography helps us finally listen.
If you've followed me for a while, you might know me as a functional health coach, a hormone nerd, a faith-filled woman who can't stop talking about testing, not guessing. But here's something that surprises even my longest-time followers — I've been a medical thermographer for nearly a decade.
Today, I want to pull back the curtain on what thermography actually is, answer the questions I hear most often, and share why I believe it's one of the most powerful — and underused — tools available to us right now.
Pour yourself something warm. Let's dive in.
So… What Is Thermography?
Thermography is a non-invasive, radiation-free imaging tool that uses an infrared camera to detect and map heat patterns across the body.
What we're looking for: blood flow, congestion, inflammation, and physiological changes — often before symptoms even appear.
The camera we use at Thermography Medical Clinic is designed by Fleur, right here in Canada. The imagery it produces is a colour-coded map of your body's thermal landscape:
- 🟢 Green = within normal range
- 🟡 Yellow / Red / White = varying levels of inflammation
- 🔵 Blue / Deep Purple = congestion or areas running colder than they should
Those colours and patterns? They mean something. And that's where the real conversation begins.
How Does It Actually Work?
When you come in for a session, here's what to expect:
You go through a health intake, then undress to the appropriate level for your scan (more on that in a moment). You stand for about 15 minutes to acclimate to room temperature — we're removing the impression of your bra, the heat from your clothes, and bringing your skin to a neutral baseline.
The room is kept at a comfortable temperature — not too hot, not too cold. There are no drafts, no windows, and the room is completely private. It's just you, me, and the camera.
We then photograph different regions of the body — left and right comparisons are essential — moving through the head, throat, neck, chest, upper back, breast, abdomen, pelvic floor, and (for full body studies) the legs, knees, feet, arms, and hands.
Once the images are captured, they're uploaded and sent to our interpreter — the incredible Sharon Edwards, owner of Thermography Medical Clinic and a 20+ year veteran of interpreting thermographic patterns. The report comes back within 7–10 days, and then we book your follow-up call.
That follow-up call? It may be the most important part of the whole experience.
Is It Safe? Is It Painful?
Completely safe. Zero radiation. Zero compression. Zero contact.
The most uncomfortable part? Standing there in your birthday suit for a few minutes. 😄
I'm six feet away from you, behind a privacy screen. The room is locked. It is just you, the warmth of the space, and the quiet — and it's completely painless.
I've imaged an 18-month-old child. I've worked with women in wheelchairs. I've worked with men and women of every age and background. Thermography truly is for everyone.
What Can Thermography Detect?
This is the question I love most — because the answer is so much more than people expect.
Thermography can reveal patterns related to:
- Inflammation — acute and chronic, anywhere in the body
- Circulatory issues — including deep vein concerns, varicose veins, and hand/foot circulation
- Hormonal imbalances — estrogen dominance, cortisol patterns, progesterone deficiency
- Thyroid dysfunction — the thyroid is a sensitive, self-protective organ, and we capture it beautifully
- Breast changes — lymphatic congestion, adrenal stress, structural shifts, temperature asymmetries
- Lymphatic system — is it working overtime? Congested? What is it busy collecting?
- Musculoskeletal stress — trigger points, gait problems, TMJ, hip imbalance, fall risk
- Cardiovascular health — circulatory patterns throughout the body
- Metabolic function — insulin resistance, glucose patterns, organ stress
- Gut and organ health — what's inflamed, what's congested, what needs support
Here's the piece I feel deeply: the breasts are not separate from the body. That's the limitation of a mammogram or an ultrasound — they look at one isolated region. I look at you as a whole person. Your breast health is a reflection of the terrain of your body. The "cherries on top," as I sometimes say, may suffer the consequences of the chaos happening elsewhere.
What Thermography Is NOT
I want to be clear about this, because there's a lot of confusion — and I think it actually keeps people from giving thermography the place it deserves.
Thermography does not diagnose. It is not a replacement for a mammogram, an ultrasound, or any diagnostic test. Diagnostic tools answer the definitive yes or no: Is it broken? Is a disease present?
Thermography is a functional assessment tool. It shows us how your tissues are behaving — the metabolic processes, the stress responses, the patterns of inflammation and congestion that give us clues about where the body is struggling and where it has healing opportunities.
Think of it like this: diagnostic testing is the crime scene investigation. Thermography is the detective noticing that something feels off before the crime ever happens.
Preparing for Your Scan
Preparation matters — a lot. In the 24–48 hours before your imaging:
- ❌ No over-exercising (creates artificial muscle heat)
- ❌ No lotions, makeup, deodorant, or face cream
- ❌ No hot showers within 3 hours of your appointment
- ❌ No hot liquids within 3 hours, or ice cold drinks within 1 hour
- ❌ No chiropractic adjustments, PEMF, or massage the day before
You'll receive detailed preparation instructions when you fill out your intake form. Please read them. Your results depend on showing up as close as possible to your natural, undisturbed baseline.
How Often Should You Get a Thermography Scan?
Here's how I recommend approaching it:
- Your first scan establishes your baseline.
- 3–6 months later, a follow-up scan shows whether any patterns have changed — and whether what we saw was your "normal" or something to monitor.
- Annually from there, thermography becomes part of your whole-health check-in, woven in alongside your bloodwork and other testing.
Once a year, we pull together everything — your lifestyle, your protocols, your lab results — and we see if they're working. That's the power of comparison over time.
What About Insurance?
Coverage varies depending on where you are and who you're working with. Some clients are able to use homeopathic coverage; others have received insurance codes from their physicians. We always create a receipt upon request.
But here's the honest truth — and I'll say it plainly:
Many clients choose thermography as an out-of-pocket investment in preventative health.
We are so accustomed to waiting until something goes wrong. Thermography flips that. It's not about chasing disease — it's about understanding where your body is under stress before symptoms take hold, before surgeries happen, before the years of small signals turn into something bigger.
That's not an expense. That's an investment.
For the Men in Your Life
Yes — thermography is absolutely for men too.
We can assess cardiovascular health, thyroid function, gut and metabolic patterns, musculoskeletal stress, and the pelvic floor environment that supports prostate health. Men tend to keep their health concerns close to the chest (pun intended), but the body tells the whole story — and the story is right there on the screen.
I had the privilege recently of working with a man navigating prostate cancer. His full body thermography opened up a beautiful, honest conversation about terrain, environment, and how the body processes and eliminates. There are no crazy questions. That's how true healing begins.
A Closing Word
I believe — with my whole heart — that God designed this body to speak to us. Thermography is one of the tools that helps us listen.
It helps us ask better questions. It builds our confidence to advocate for ourselves. It gives our practitioners a fuller picture. And it reminds us that we are whole people — not a collection of isolated parts to be scanned one at a time.
If this has stirred something in you, I'd love to hear from you. Reach out on social, send me an email, or book a free strategy call. If you're not in Ontario, I'll help you find a trusted thermographer wherever you are in the world.
You deserve to understand your body. You deserve a prevention plan. And you deserve practitioners who see all of you.
