Age...
I drive for Uber + Lyft and tonight I picked up an older guy and took him across town to his home. He looked close to 80, had a fancy walker, said he had issues with several verterbrae in his back, and had a sharp-edged sense of humor that I liked. He's in the back seat and I can't see people back there, and all they can see is the back or side of my head, less if it's dark outside. I had some Pink Floyd playing and he made a comment about listening to "rock and roll" and I said it's because I'm a child of the 70's. He said, "Well, I'm a child of the 60's." Hmmm ... ok. Anyway, we had fun trading barbs and he said some stuff that made me curious about his age. I was guessing he was about 10 years older than me, so I asked him how old he is, and he said, "I'm 68. Gonna be 69 soon. What about you?" I said, "Well, I'm going to be 70 this year." He seemed rather dumbfounded. So was I -- this guy who seemed 10 years older was really one year younger. Hmmm...
It was a fun ride, but it made me think about how we see ourselves. The person looking out my eyes thinks he's 25 but my body says otherwise. I do look a lot younger than my age, and that's nice. I do like that when I get younger kids in the car and ask if the music I'm playing is ok, most of them say, "Oh, sure, my [family member(s)] listen to it all the time, and I'm cool with it" -- it's mostly 70's rock. What can I say ... although I couldn't stand the music MY parents listened to when I was growing up (Broadway show tunes).
I get to meet such a variety of people driving rideshare. I've learned it just doesn't pay to make quick judgments about anybody. But it's quite strange the boxes people put themselves into, and it's not something you can just ask why they do it.
