Are centralised crypto exchanges safe?

With so much money being transferred between wallets and exchanges, how safe, or should I say, how legit is each and every dollar? Surely money laundering is rampant and easy to transfer? And yes I know every transaction address is recorded on the blockchain but not the source of every dollar! Coinbase is too closely tied to the US govt.

Funny how decentralised exchanges are not as large nor popular! Here you own your private keys!

Real estate is still the safer option in my humble opinion.
