Quick Urban colour sketching
It can be very interesting to see what happens when we set a time limit for our painting. Here I took an almost random photo of a street corner near me, and used it as a starting point for a quick practice painting. If you're wondering it's in central Barking, the next town. I wasn't focusing on getting a likeness just general composition like the positioning of the the building and trees. And I added a tall tree on the right in order to create a strong shadow across the foreground.
Another little tip from this exercise is that we are allowed to change the weather. The photo was taken on a dull day but it didn't matter as we can make it a sunny day.I just decided where the sun was and cast the shadows accordingly.
I think I did this about a year ago and don't remember exactly how long it took or even the reason - I think I was just trying out different colors for shadow tones, but it wouldn't have been longer than 15 mins as it was on a small sheet.
