Complete watch collection - at last!
My watch roll holds 5 and I have 6 - but I’m always wearing one, so each watch has a spot! The plastic Casio gets the vacant slot in the canvas roll when I’m wearing one of the others (but it just doesn’t look right, and I don’t really consider it as part of my ‘collection’). It keeps the ‘real’ watch’s bed warm. Funny that, as it’s the cheapest (US$40) but most accurate, most reliable , most dependable and most versatile of all my watches (some US$8,000).
In summer the Casio gets a lot of wrist time for regular ocean swimming and paddling. I could wear any of the Rolexes (10ATM) or the Techné (20ATM) but I feel it’s a bit of an overkill - why risk the good watches? (I lost a Seiko in the ocean before)
If I had to choose one it would be the Techné MIL-W-3818B. The Explorer II comes a close second, but the date complication and cyclops don’t sit well with me, although I realise they’re required for what the watch was designed for - spelunking (cave exploration).
I think my little collection is balanced and well considered . Field & tool watches, and an unconventional. I have no interest in flashy stuff (or obsolete diver’s - been there, done that with a Seiko and a Sub). That’s it - no more watches - but I have ordered a couple of Marine Nationale type straps!
Also, although you’re probably not interested, I just got hold of a Stealth Strika surf-ski in top condition for just US$60! They’re about US$1,500 new. The owner said he couldn’t balance in it and just wanted it gone! I think he was frustrated as it’s a stable, intermediate ski?
My regular ski is a Think Uno Max elite (about US$3,000 new) that requires special skill to keep upright, so this one’s a relaxing ‘walk in the park’ second ski for me. We live close to the ocean so I’m loving the Stealth!
Unfortunately, the never-ending marketing of wellness, fragrances and the like - unrelated to watches, but pinned to the top of the posts - is a constant reminder that Watch Lover Community is not all about watches - it serves to capture an audience to flog stuff to. Stuff I have no interest in, like men's perfume - really? Trust me, if fragrance free, anti-perspirant deodorant is not doing it for you, that’s not the problem - it lies elsewhere.
Try gentle, polite, caring, compassionate and accommodating - it works wonders! It’s the last one people seem to have the most difficulty with? Each to their own, but I’d rather not be associated with sneaky marketing to ensnare the vulnerable, so hesitantly and with trepidation, this will be it from me for the foreseeable future.
I’d like to thank you for the fun, questions, advice, suggestions and wisdom I’ve experienced in Watch Lover Community. I'll retain my membership until it gets cancelled (after 30 days of inactivity?) so you can still message or tag me, but no more posts or comments from me.
I’ve had an awesome experience in my short time here and learned stuff that changed my thinking For example, to accept - and even appreciate - the date/cyclops on the Explorer II that almost made me sell it, and to realise the Khaki Field is a homage to the Benrus DTU-2A/P, - not the real deal. And not even a good homage at that! It doesn’t have the solid, non-removable case back or the dome crystal. (I've had both, so I've seen them).
I’ll have a fond memory of Watch Lover Community - it’s really special - and particularly some of the members. Thank you!
