Everybody is scared of the same thing... "What if I hire someone and they are useless?" Fair. It happens. But it does not have to happen to YOU if you do this right. Here is how I screen, simple version... First, never hire off a resume alone. Resumes lie. Anybody can write "detail oriented, great communicator." Means nothing. Give them a real test task. Small, paid, and exactly like the work you actually need. How they handle that one task tells you more than ten interviews. Do they ask smart questions. Do they hit the deadline. Do they communicate when stuck. That is your answer right there.... Second, watch the communication. A VA who goes quiet for two days during a TEST will go quiet for a week once hired. The speed and clarity you see now is what you get forever. Trust it. Third, run a trial period. Do not marry anybody on day one. The first 30 days is a tryout, both ways. Clear expectations, clear check ins, and if it is not working you both move on clean. Fourth, and this is the one people skip. Know what GOOD looks like before you hire. If you cannot describe the result you want, no VA on earth can hit it. Vague in, garbage out. Red flags to walk away from... Promises everything, asks no questions. Slow or sloppy on the test. Wants full payment upfront before proving anything. Cannot explain how they would do the work. Get this right and hiring a VA stops being a gamble and becomes the best move you make all year.
