The Sumerian Abacus.
The Sumerian abacus was a simple stone tablet with grooves, like an ancient whiteboard with rows and columns. Each groove represented a different value ones, tens, sixties, and so on. By sliding small stones (think of them as ancient Post-it notes) into these grooves, merchants could quickly tally their goods, calculate trade deals, and ensure they were not getting ripped off. This early computing tool was born out of sheer necessity when you are dealing with hundreds of jars of olive oil and stacks of woven baskets, you need a way to keep everything straight. The abacus was their go to gadget, helping them keep the numbers under control and their business thriving. This simple tool, the abacus, laid the foundation for the number systems we still use today. The Sumerians’ base-60 system gave us the 60-minute hour and 360-degree circle.
