We've touched on this subject before, but today I want to revisit it from a different perspective. What if the best way to help someone isn't to give them the answer? Think about it. When someone comes to you with a problem, what's your first instinct? If you're like most experienced leaders, you probably start thinking about how to fix it before they've even finished explaining. After all, you've been there, you've dealt with similar situations, and you know what works. But here's something worth considering. Every time you solve someone's problem for them, you may be taking away an opportunity for them to develop their own judgment. As we all know, there are situations where immediate direction is necessary. But not every problem requires you to be the hero. HERE'S YOUR SKILL LAB FPR TODAY. The next time someone brings you a problem, try asking these three questions before offering your solution. 1. "What have you tried so far?" You might discover they've already made more progress than you realized. 2. "What do you think would work?" Give them an opportunity to think through the possibilities. 3. "What do you need from me?" Maybe they need advice. Maybe they need resources. Or maybe they just need someone to listen. Here's what I want you to pay attention to. Did you help them solve today's problem, or did you help them become more capable of solving tomorrow's? There's a difference. YOUR CHALLENGE Try this with one person before the week or weekend is over. Don't rush to rescue them. Give them room to think. Then come back and tell us what happened.
