Just a theory

All the back and forth in the news about the legality of tariffs looks pretty clearly engineered to me. I find it quite unlikely that the Whitehouse genuinely ignorantly acted outside the law, but rather I think Trump and his staff are pretty smart, and knew that their actions would trigger prominently visible infighting and bickering which would dominate headlines for a long time; keeping eyes on the credible threats of tariffs; and thereby maintaining elevated inflation expectations. Just my take. What do you think?
